· · 2 min read

Vedanta Iron and Steel Ltd (VISL) posted a net loss of Rs 324 crore in the September 2026 quarter, a sharp decline from a Rs 121 crore profit in the prior quarter. Revenue for the quarter also fell 24% to Rs 2,788 crore.

Vedanta Iron and Steel Ltd (VISL) has announced a significant financial downturn for the second quarter of fiscal year 2027, reporting a net loss of Rs 324 crore. This contrasts sharply with the Rs 121 crore profit recorded in the preceding June 2026 quarter.

The company's revenue also experienced a substantial drop, falling 24% to Rs 2,788 crore in the September 2026 quarter, down from Rs 3,662 crore in the previous quarter. Operational profitability, measured by EBITDA, crashed 84% to just Rs 83 crore, a stark reduction from Rs 515 crore quarter-on-quarter. Consequently, the EBITDA margin compressed significantly from 13.9% to 1.7%.

Operational Performance and Strategic Initiatives

Pankaj Kumar Sharma, CEO of VISL, commented on the half-year performance, stating, "VISL delivered a stronger year-on-year operating performance in H1 FY27, supported by improved steel realisations, higher steel volumes and continued efficiency initiatives." He also highlighted strategic moves made during the quarter.

"During the quarter, we completed planned shutdowns at our Bokaro and Goa operations to strengthen asset reliability for the second half. We also continued to advance our growth projects and renewable energy initiatives, while maintaining a sharp focus on safety, operational discipline and long-term value creation."

These planned shutdowns were aimed at enhancing asset reliability for the upcoming second half of the fiscal year, suggesting a forward-looking approach despite the quarterly setback. The company continues to push forward with growth projects and renewable energy initiatives, aligning with broader industry trends towards sustainability.

Debt Reduction and Market Reaction

Despite the quarterly loss, VISL demonstrated progress in managing its debt. Net External Debt decreased to Rs 1,790 crore in September 2026, a notable reduction from Rs 2,862 crore reported in March 2026. The Net External Debt to EBITDA ratio stood at 1.3 times for H1 FY27.

Following the announcement of these earnings after market hours, Vedanta Iron and Steel stock reacted positively on the BSE, closing 5% higher at Rs 28. This pushed the Vedanta Group firm's market capitalization to Rs 10,949 crore, indicating investor optimism perhaps focused on the year-on-year performance or debt management rather than the recent quarterly dip.
