US FDA Approves Sun Pharma's ILUMYA for Psoriatic Arthritis Treatment

· · 2 min read

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd.'s drug ILUMYA (guselkumab) for treating active psoriatic arthritis in adults. This expands ILUMYA's use beyond moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis, bolstering the company's portfolio.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted approval for Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd.'s drug ILUMYA (guselkumab) for the treatment of adults experiencing active psoriatic arthritis. This significant regulatory milestone broadens the application of ILUMYA, an interleukin-23 (IL-23) inhibitor, beyond its initial approval for moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis.

The expanded approval positions ILUMYA as an additional therapeutic option for patients with active psoriatic arthritis, a chronic autoimmune condition characterized by joint pain, swelling, and stiffness. The drug is administered exclusively by healthcare providers, offering a structured treatment pathway for patients.

Clinical Efficacy and Safety Profile

The FDA's decision is underpinned by robust data from the Phase 3 INSPIRE-1 and INSPIRE-2 clinical studies. These trials rigorously assessed the efficacy and safety of ILUMYA in adults with active psoriatic arthritis over a 24-week period, following two initial doses. According to Sun Pharma, the safety data observed in these studies remained consistent with the drug's established safety profile, with no new safety signals identified.

Rick Ascroft, North America CEO of Sun Pharma, highlighted the importance of this approval. He stated, "The FDA approval of ILUMYA for adults with active psoriatic arthritis marks another important milestone for the company and builds on the drug's established clinical experience in plaque psoriasis." Ascroft added that as an IL-23 inhibitor requiring healthcare provider administration, ILUMYA offers a valuable option for individuals who may benefit from regular in-office care or are unable to self-administer treatment.

Understanding Psoriatic Arthritis

Psoriatic arthritis is an immune-mediated disease that can manifest at any age, irrespective of the severity of psoriasis. It leads to inflammation, pain, and stiffness in the joints, as well as in the areas where tendons and ligaments connect to bones. Sun Pharma estimates that approximately 2.4 million Americans are affected by this condition.

Important Safety Information

Patients considering ILUMYA should be aware of potential risks. Sun Pharma notes that the drug may increase the risk of infections, and therefore, patients must be evaluated for tuberculosis before commencing treatment. Common adverse reactions reported in clinical trials for psoriatic arthritis include upper respiratory tract infections and COVID-19.

Market Impact

Following this announcement, Sun Pharma shares were observed to be in focus in the market, reflecting investor interest in the expansion of the company's pharmaceutical portfolio and its strengthened position in treating psoriatic diseases.
