US Ambassador: India Trade Deal 99% Done, Weeks Away From Completion

· · 2 min read

US Ambassador Sergio Gor announced that the interim trade deal between the US and India is 99% complete, with remaining technicalities expected to be finalized within weeks. He praised India's "incredible negotiators" for their role in the complex process.

Negotiations for the interim trade deal between the United States and India are nearly complete, with US Ambassador Sergio Gor stating that 99% of the agreement is finalized. The remaining 1%, largely technicalities, is anticipated to be sorted out within the next several weeks, not years, allowing leaders to enshrine it into law.

Complex Negotiations Nearing Finish Line

Ambassador Gor, speaking at a recent event, highlighted the extensive nature of such agreements. He noted that India possesses "incredible negotiators," which contributes to the rigorous process. He drew a parallel to the India-EU trade deal, which took 19 years to conclude, underscoring the complexity of deals that involve "tens of thousands of points sometimes. Everything from mangos to technology to fuel."

Boosting Economic Engagement and Trust

As economic ties deepen between the two nations, Gor emphasized the critical need for predictable taxation and regulatory frameworks to foster a thriving business environment. He stressed the importance of "candid and constructive engagement on export controls and technology flows grounded in trust," along with robust intellectual property protection to encourage innovation and investment.

Gor recounted instances where American companies sought assurances regarding the safety of investing in India, particularly concerning intellectual property and research and development protection. His message to them was one of trust, asserting that the Indian government cares deeply about these issues.

Trade Growth and Future Collaboration

Bilateral trade between the US and India has seen remarkable growth, skyrocketing from $20 billion to $220 billion in goods and services over the past two decades. Gor attributed this expansion to the "unbreakable trust" between the countries, driven by innovation and high-value sectors. He observed that linkages are increasingly forming not just between large corporations, but also among agile startups, entrepreneurs, and in areas like digital trade, advanced manufacturing, and emerging technologies.

The United States, according to Gor, is "laser focused" on enhancing bilateral cooperation in AI development and expanding trusted supply chains for active pharmaceutical ingredients and critical minerals. Addressing questions about tariffs, Gor clarified that India has not been singled out, and tariff rates under the interim trade deal are actually lower for India compared to some of its neighbors.
