UPSC Prelims 2026: Essential Exam Day Instructions for Candidates

· · 3 min read

The UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026 is scheduled for May 24. Candidates must adhere to strict guidelines regarding reporting times, permitted items, and prohibited belongings to avoid disqualification.

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026 is set for May 24, with thousands of aspirants gearing up for this crucial stage. Beyond rigorous preparation, candidates must strictly follow exam day instructions to avoid any issues that could jeopardize their attempt.

Key Reporting Times and Gate Closure

Candidates are strongly advised to arrive at their examination centers at least 30 to 45 minutes before the reporting time to account for security checks and avoid last-minute stress. The examination will be conducted in two shifts:

  • General Studies Paper 1: 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM
  • CSAT Paper 2: 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM

Crucially, entry gates will close precisely at 9:00 AM for the morning session and 2:00 PM for the afternoon session. No candidate will be permitted entry after these times, regardless of reasons such as traffic delays or document issues.

Mandatory Items for Entry

Candidates must ensure they carry only the essential and permitted items into the examination hall:

  • A printed copy of the UPSC Prelims Admit Card 2026 with a clear photograph and details.
  • An original government-approved photo identity proof (e.g., Aadhaar Card, PAN Card, Passport, Voter ID, Driving Licence). Ensure the name and date of birth match the admit card.
  • Two recent passport-size photographs (especially if the admit card photo is unclear).
  • Black ballpoint pens for marking answers on the OMR sheet.
  • An analog watch.
  • A transparent water bottle.
  • Chocolates or energy bars are allowed only for genuine medical reasons.

Officials emphasize that only black ballpoint pens are to be used for the OMR answer sheet.

Prohibited Items and Security Checks

Strict security checks, including frisking, will be conducted at all examination centers. Candidates are advised to avoid carrying unnecessary belongings. The following items are strictly prohibited:

  • Mobile phones (even if switched off), smartwatches, and fitness bands.
  • Bluetooth devices and earphones.
  • Calculators and pen drives.
  • Books, notes, and chits.
  • Large bags and extra luggage.

Candidates should also avoid bringing expensive jewellery or valuables, as secure storage facilities are generally not provided at centers.

OMR Sheet Instructions and Exam Discipline

Filling the OMR answer sheet correctly is paramount. Candidates must carefully enter their roll number, booklet series, and test booklet code using only a black ballpoint pen. Overwriting, incorrect marking, or errors in mandatory entries could lead to the invalidation of the answer sheet.

Maintaining silence and proper examination discipline throughout both papers is crucial. Any suspicious behavior, disturbance, or attempt to use unfair means will result in immediate disciplinary action, including potential permanent debarment from future UPSC examinations. Changing allotted seats without permission can also lead to serious complications.

Dress Code Advice

While UPSC does not enforce a specific dress code, candidates are advised to wear simple, comfortable clothing to facilitate quick security clearance and ensure comfort during the long examination hours.

For Male Candidates:

  • Light formal or smart casual clothing without heavy prints, slogans, or flashy designs.
  • Lightweight footwear such as sandals or simple shoes.
  • Avoid metallic accessories like chains, bracelets, or rings to minimize frisking time.

For Female Candidates:

  • Simple Indian or Western outfits, such as salwar suits or sarees with minimal embroidery.
  • Discourage heavy jewellery, elaborate accessories, and uncomfortable footwear to avoid delays during security verification.

Candidates are reminded to remain calm and manage their time effectively during the examination. It is also important to preserve the admit card even after the exam, as it may be required for subsequent stages of the Civil Services Examination process.
