Udit Sethi Transforms Mumbai's Liquor Retail with Hops Cork's Innovative Experience

· · 2 min read

Udit Sethi has modernized Mumbai's traditional liquor retail sector through Hops Cork, expanding to 15 stores and introducing luxury boutiques, craft beers, and advanced tech. He focuses on enhancing customer experience and staff expertise, evolving the family's decades-old business.

Udit Sethi, a prominent figure in Mumbai's alcobev industry, has redefined liquor retail through his venture, Hops Cork. Building upon a family legacy that began in 1984 with his father, Sanjiv Sethi, Udit has expanded the business into a network of 15 modern liquor stores across Mumbai, emphasizing an elevated customer experience.

From Hospitality to Retail Innovation

Sethi's journey to transform the family business was informed by his extensive education and international experience. He pursued Hospitality Management in Scotland, specializing in Beverage Control, and later earned a Master's in International Digital Marketing from Edinburgh Napier University. His tenure as a Duty Manager with IHG Hotels in Scotland provided invaluable insights into hospitality-based service, a philosophy he brought back to Mumbai's often transactional liquor retail landscape.

Hops Cork: A New Retail Paradigm

Under Udit Sethi's leadership, Hops Cork has moved beyond conventional counter sales. A signature innovation is the creation of luxury wine and beer boutiques designed for discovery, product knowledge, and a premium shopping experience. The company also launched its own brand of craft beers, 'The Storytellers', available in 1-liter growlers, catering to the burgeoning craft beer market.

Technology and Convenience at the Forefront

Sethi integrated technology to enhance operational efficiency and customer convenience. Hops Cork developed an in-house retail software system for real-time sales, inventory management, and operational reporting. Furthermore, models like Hops Cork Xpress offer consumers chilled wine and beer bottles for immediate enjoyment, addressing the demand for quick and easy access.

Beyond traditional retail, Hops Cork has diversified into catering large beverage needs for events, including weddings and private celebrations across Mumbai. This expansion has provided deeper insights into consumer preferences and occasion-specific demands.

Shaping the Future of Alcobev Retail

Hops Cork's commitment to customer-centricity, staff training, and product expertise has garnered industry recognition. The company was listed among the top retailers in Greater Mumbai at the 2025 India Drinks Retail Awards, with Udit Sethi emerging as a key voice for the new generation of Indian liquor retail.

For Udit, modern retail is not only about offering many more products but assisting customers in making informed decisions.

As Indian consumers become more discerning and experimental, Sethi envisions a liquor retail sector built on experience, discovery, and trust, moving away from a purely transactional model. His strategic blend of legacy, global hospitality insights, and contemporary business practices positions Hops Cork at the forefront of this evolving industry.
