Uber Boosts India Safety with 4 New Features, Including In-App Video Recording

· · 3 min read

Uber has rolled out four significant safety features in India, including an industry-first in-app video recording tool for drivers and an ambulance assistance service. These additions aim to enhance security for both riders and drivers across the platform.

Uber has unveiled a new suite of safety features for its platform in India, aiming to significantly enhance security for both riders and drivers. The additions, announced recently, include a pioneering in-app video recording tool for drivers and an emergency ambulance assistance service, underscoring Uber's commitment to improving safety standards across the ride-hailing industry.

Key Safety Enhancements Introduced

The four primary safety features now available to Uber users and drivers in India are:

  • Record My Ride: This innovative feature allows drivers to securely record encrypted in-cab video using their own smartphones directly through the Uber app if they feel unsafe during a trip. The recordings are encrypted and can only be accessed by Uber if the driver chooses to submit them as part of a safety report.
  • Ambulance Assistance: In partnership with medical logistics provider Dial 4242, Uber now offers an ambulance assistance service. Both riders and drivers can request emergency medical support after an accident directly through the app's existing 24x7 Safety Line.
  • Don't Type & Drive: To minimize driver distraction, the Uber Driver app will now block manual typing while the vehicle is in motion. Drivers will receive a prompt to safely stop their vehicle before they can respond to messages.
  • Set Your Own PIN: Riders gain more control over trip verification by being able to create and manage their own unique trip verification PINs, adding an extra layer of security before starting a ride.

Building on Existing Safety Initiatives

These new features complement Uber's existing safety measures, which include audio recording, women rider preference, helmet selfie verification, seatbelt reminders, RideCheck, safety preferences, phone and address anonymization, and the 24x7 Safety Line. Uber officials highlighted that many of these initiatives were industry firsts that have since become standard expectations for ride-hailing platforms.

Industry and Government Applaud Efforts

Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari, commended Uber's continuous efforts, stating, "Following traffic rules, wearing seat belts and helmets, sound simple but play a big role in reducing fatalities in road accidents. Technology can play an important role in spreading awareness and making our roads safer." He acknowledged Uber's partnership on the Sadak Suraksha Abhiyaan, a road safety awareness campaign.

Sooraj Nair, Head - Safety Operations, Uber India & South Asia, emphasized the company's philosophy: "What feels innovative today becomes expected tomorrow. That's exactly how safety should evolve. Our belief is simple: safety innovation should become the industry's baseline, not remain a differentiator."

Uber, which began operations in India in 2013, now serves over 125 cities, offering a range of services from bikes and autos to cars, metro, and bus bookings through its app. The company affirmed its ongoing investment in technology and partnerships to further enhance safety, including specialized products like Uber for Teens and Uber for Seniors.
