On the eve of India's 80th Independence Day, President Droupadi Murmu addressed the nation, presenting a comprehensive roadmap for a 'Viksit Bharat' (Developed India) by 2047. Her vision balanced a solemn reflection on historical struggles with an ambitious blueprint for future growth, emphasizing rapid economic expansion, deep social inclusion, and decisive national security measures.
Charting a Path to Developed India by 2047
President Murmu highlighted a transformative era for India, underscoring the nation's journey towards becoming a leading global power. She celebrated the country's economic resilience, noting its position as the fastest-growing major economy despite global instabilities.
Her address paid tribute to the architects of modern India, including Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, acknowledging their sacrifices and contributions to national unity. She also marked Vibhajan Vibheeshika Smriti Divas, remembering those affected by the horrors of Partition.
Inclusive Growth and Social Empowerment
A significant portion of the President's speech focused on inclusive development. She proudly stated that over 25 crore people have been lifted out of poverty, attributing this success to landmark schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, which now boasts nearly 59 crore accounts (with over 32 crore held by women), and Ayushman Bharat, providing free healthcare coverage to 60 crore citizens.
"The true meaning of freedom lies in ensuring that all citizens are able to utilise opportunities to fulfil their aspirations, and work towards the goal of making India the foremost nation in the world," President Murmu affirmed.
The President strongly advocated for women-led development, celebrating the achievement of the 'Lakhpati Didi' target of 3 crore women and setting an ambitious goal to empower 3 crore more. She also lauded women's achievements in diverse fields, including their significant contribution to India's medal tally at the recent Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
Addressing the youth, who comprise 65 percent of the population under 35, she praised their entrepreneurial spirit and highlighted recent reforms in public examination systems aimed at enhancing transparency and trust.
Strengthening National Security and Global Stature
In terms of national security, President Murmu announced significant achievements, including India being virtually free from Naxalism. She also referenced key military milestones like Operation Sindoor and the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, signaling a robust approach to defense and strategic interests.
A Call for Environmental Stewardship and Unity
Concluding her address, President Murmu made a passionate appeal for environmental conservation, reciting a Santali poem by Pandit Raghunath Murmu and quoting Telugu writer Gurajada Apparao:
"Love your country, foster goodness. A nation is not just its land, a nation is all its people."
She urged every citizen to unite in transforming "Swatantra Bharat into Viksit Bharat," emphasizing collective responsibility in nation-building.
