Toyota's Entry into India's EV Market
Toyota Kirloskar Motor has officially introduced its inaugural battery electric vehicle (BEV), the Urban Cruiser Ebella, to the Indian market. Launched at an introductory ex-showroom price of Rs 23.60 lakh, this new SUV signifies Toyota's strategic push into India's rapidly expanding electric vehicle sector, particularly targeting the competitive mid-size EV segment.
The Urban Cruiser Ebella, available in the E3 variant, is powered by a robust 61 kWh battery pack. This setup delivers 128 kW of power and 189 Nm of torque, promising a capable performance for urban and highway driving. Notably, the vehicle shares its underlying platform with the Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara, leveraging a collaborative approach to EV development.
Advanced Features and Interior Comfort
Inside the cabin, the Urban Cruiser Ebella offers a premium and comfortable experience. It features a sophisticated dual-tone interior layout, complemented by practical amenities such as ventilated front seats, ambient lighting, and a panoramic sunroof. Rear passengers benefit from sliding and reclining seats, enhancing comfort on longer journeys. An integrated JBL sound system ensures a rich audio experience for all occupants.
Integrated Technology
The dashboard is equipped with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, providing essential driving information clearly. A prominent 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system serves as the central hub for entertainment and navigation, supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Furthermore, Toyota's i-Connect platform offers a suite of connected car features, including remote charging control, charge scheduling, and real-time battery monitoring.
Safety and Charging Capabilities
Safety is a paramount consideration for the Urban Cruiser Ebella. The SUV comes loaded with Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), seven airbags, and a 360-degree camera for enhanced situational awareness. Its high-tensile body structure is designed to offer superior occupant protection. For charging flexibility, the vehicle supports both AC and DC fast charging options.
Ownership Experience and Market Impact
Toyota is committed to providing a comprehensive ownership experience for Ebella customers. This includes an eight-year warranty on the battery, along with attractive buyback and battery subscription programs. To support its new EV lineup, the company has expanded its service infrastructure, enabling over 500 service touchpoints across India for BEV maintenance and training more than 2,500 technicians specifically for EV servicing.
The Ebella will be available in a diverse palette of five monotone and four dual-tone color options, allowing customers to personalize their vehicle. This launch further solidifies Toyota Kirloskar Motor's position as a significant player in the Indian passenger vehicle market, where its strategic alliance with Suzuki has helped it become the fifth-largest manufacturer by sales volume, achieving a 7% market share in FY26.
