Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd (TRSL) is strategically positioned to capitalize on India's expanding railway infrastructure, particularly in the passenger rolling stock segment. The company's growth trajectory is strongly linked to the government's ambitious plans for the Vande Bharat Express and the country's burgeoning metro rail networks.
Riding the Passenger Rail Boom
The passenger mobility business, encompassing Vande Bharat trains and metro coaches, now constitutes a significant 81% of TRSL's current order book, a substantial increase from just 10% in FY23. This shift reflects the company's successful diversification towards higher-growth segments.
As of FY26, Titagarh Rail Systems is actively executing substantial orders, including manufacturing 519 metro cars and 1,280 Vande Bharat coaches in partnership with BHEL. This robust order pipeline aligns with the Indian government's vision to operate 800 Vande Bharat train sets by 2030, a significant jump from 164 sets by December 2025, with further expansion targeting 4,500 sets by 2047.
Metro Network Expansion and Strategic Manufacturing
Beyond Vande Bharat, India's metro network is projected to nearly double, expanding from approximately 1,100 km currently to around 2,000 km by 2030, with an additional 1,000 km of routes under proposal. This rapid expansion provides a sustained demand for metro rolling stock, a segment where TRSL holds a strong position.
To further solidify its market standing and enhance profitability, Titagarh Rail Systems is developing in-house capabilities for manufacturing propulsion systems. This strategic move is expected to support faster growth and potentially lead to better margin expansion in the coming years.
Long-Term Freight Outlook
While the passenger segment drives near-term growth, the freight rolling stock business, which includes wagons, presents a promising long-term outlook. The Indian Railways aims to increase rail freight's modal share to 45% from about 22% in 2025 and handle 3.3 billion tonnes of cargo by 2030 (up from 1.67 billion tonnes in FY26). This governmental push is expected to generate future tender rollouts, bolstering the freight segment over time, even if current orders are modest.
Financial Strength and Analyst Confidence
Titagarh Rail Systems maintains a healthy financial position, marked by a net debt to EBITDA ratio of approximately 0.5 times and a return on equity ranging from 10% to 13%. Analyst firm ICICI Securities has initiated coverage on TRSL with an 'ADD' rating and a 12-month target price of Rs 966, valuing the company at 35 times H1FY29E earnings per share. This positive outlook is underpinned by projections of a 52% compound annual growth rate in profit after tax between FY26 and FY29, driven primarily by strong execution in the passenger segment and a diversified business model.
