Texmaco-Led JV to Invest ₹1,800 Crore in Indian Railcar Leasing Expansion

· · 2 min read

A joint venture involving Texmaco Rail & Engineering, Touax Group, and Trinity Rail will invest ₹1,800 crore to acquire 100 new rail rakes for India's freight sector over the next 3-5 years. This initiative aims to significantly boost the nation's rail freight capacity.

A new strategic partnership is set to inject substantial capital into India's railway freight sector. Texmaco Rail & Engineering Limited, in collaboration with the Touax Group and Trinity Rail, has announced plans for a significant investment of approximately ₹1,800 crore. This funding will be utilized to procure 100 new rail rakes over the coming three to five years, marking a major expansion in the country's railcar leasing capabilities.

The joint venture builds upon the existing Touax–Texmaco Railcar Leasing platform, which was established to introduce international standards in freight wagons under India's liberalized investment and leasing policies. With Trinity Rail now joining as a partner, the platform gains enhanced technological depth, bolstered financial strength, and access to global best practices in rail logistics.

Boosting India's Freight Movement Goals

This investment aligns directly with India's ambitious National Rail Plan, which seeks to elevate rail's share in freight movement from the current 27% to a target of 45% by 2030. Achieving this goal will necessitate the induction of approximately 1.4 lakh new wagons within the same timeframe, highlighting the critical need for modern and efficient rail solutions.

The demand for flexible and capital-efficient freight transportation is projected to grow significantly, driven by key government initiatives such as PM Gati Shakti, the National Logistics Policy, and the ongoing expansion of Dedicated Freight Corridors. The partnership aims to capitalize on this opportunity by integrating global leasing expertise, advanced rail technology, manufacturing excellence, and comprehensive lifecycle asset management within a unified platform.

Strengthening Indigenous Capabilities and Economic Growth

Saroj Kumar Poddar, Chairman of Texmaco Rail & Engineering Limited and Adventz Group, emphasized the importance of this collaboration. "As India aims to increase rail's share in freight movement... the need for innovative, technology-led rail solutions has never been greater," Poddar stated. He added that the partnership will strengthen indigenous design capabilities, bring global expertise to India, and contribute significantly to the "Viksit Bharat" vision by making India's rail logistics more efficient, competitive, and future-ready.

With evolving railway policies and a growing imperative for efficient freight mobility, this joint venture is strategically positioned to foster a robust railcar leasing ecosystem. Its contributions are expected to play a vital role in India's broader infrastructure development and economic growth trajectory.
