Tata Motors Targets Early 2027 for Flex-Fuel Car Launch Amidst India's E25 Push

· · 2 min read

Tata Motors aims to launch its first flex-fuel vehicle by early 2027, aligning with the Indian government's ambitious roadmap for E21 and E25 ethanol-blended petrol. The company's top executive confirmed technology readiness for the new vehicles.

Tata Motors Prepares for Flex-Fuel Debut

India's leading automaker, Tata Motors, is set to introduce its inaugural flex-fuel vehicle by early 2027. This strategic move comes as the Indian government actively evaluates a roadmap for the widespread rollout of E21 blended petrol by 2027, with E25 blending targeted for 2029.

Shailesh Chandra, the Managing Director and CEO of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, confirmed the company's readiness. “We are very comfortable in terms of technology readiness. By the end of this year or early next year, we should be ready with at least one product in flex fuel,” Chandra stated during a media conference call following the company's March quarter earnings announcement.

India's Accelerating Ethanol Blending Goals

India has made significant strides in its ethanol blending program, achieving the 20% ethanol blending (E20) target for petrol in July 2025, five years ahead of its original 2030 timeline. E20 fuel is already widely available across the country, and all motor vehicles manufactured in India from April 2023 are compliant with this blend.

Further pushing the envelope, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways proposed in April the inclusion of E100 — 100% ethanol — in testing and certification standards. While several automobile manufacturers have showcased flex-fuel vehicle prototypes, commercial production has yet to begin.

Addressing Fuel Efficiency Concerns with E20

The transition to E20 fuel has not been without its challenges. Some car owners have voiced concerns on social media regarding potential issues like overheating and reduced mileage. In response, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas clarified in August 2025 that E20 fuel causes only a “marginal 3–6% decrease in fuel efficiency” primarily in older, non-compliant vehicles.

Industry Collaboration and Future Outlook

Tata Motors is actively engaged with the government through the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) to shape the future of ethanol blending and flex-fuel vehicle development. Chandra highlighted that the recent notification from the Ministry aims to establish flex fuel as a distinct category for various ethanol blends, facilitating OEMs in developing compliant vehicles.

The push for flex-fuel technology underscores India's commitment to reducing its reliance on fossil fuels and promoting sustainable transportation solutions.
