India Fuel Prices August 13: LPG, CNG, PNG Rates Stable Amid Geopolitical Concerns

· · 2 min read

Fuel prices for LPG, CNG, and PNG remained largely unchanged across major Indian cities on August 13. Despite stable rates, concerns persist over geopolitical tensions in West Asia and significant pending government subsidies to fuel retailers.

On August 13, prices for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) saw little change across major Indian cities. While domestic LPG rates have held steady for over a month, and commercial LPG prices experienced a cut earlier this August, underlying concerns about global supply stability persist due to the ongoing West Asia conflict.

Geopolitical Tensions and Supply Strategy

Despite current price stability, concerns over potential price hikes persist due to the volatile geopolitical situation in West Asia. India is actively seeking to diversify its energy sources, aiming to procure up to a quarter of its liquefied petroleum gas imports from the United States by 2027. This strategic move is intended to reduce dependency on West Asian supplies and mitigate risks of disruption.

Meanwhile, India has seen a 17.4% decline in LPG sales, totaling 2.37 million tonnes. Industry experts attribute this shift largely to consumers transitioning to piped natural gas (PNG) amid the ongoing West Asia crisis and broader global uncertainties.

Government Subsidies and Retailer Losses

Junior oil minister Suresh Gopi recently confirmed that state-owned fuel retailers continue to sell domestic LPG below cost. In August, the revenue loss for these retailers on each 14.2-kg household cooking gas cylinder was approximately ₹188. While the government compensates these companies for their losses, payments often experience a lag.

Gopi informed lawmakers that Indian Oil Corp, Bharat Petroleum Corp, and Hindustan Petroleum Corp have maintained a Delhi price of ₹942 for household cooking gas cylinders since June 2026. Despite a ₹30,000 crore subsidy payment made to clear some dues for the 2025/26 and 2026/27 fiscal years, pending LPG dues to state retailers still amounted to over ₹59,000 crore as of July 31.

The global energy market remains tense, with reports of attacks on shipping in critical chokepoints like the Gulf of Oman and the entrance to the Red Sea. Threats regarding the closure of the Strait of Hormuz further underscore the fragility of international oil supply routes, adding pressure to fuel prices worldwide.
