Tata Motors has officially partnered with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) in the central government's ambitious ₹9,585 crore vehicle replacement program for the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR). Under the agreement, Tata Motors will provide an 8% discount on the ex-showroom price of eligible new trucks and buses.
The scheme, approved by the Union Cabinet, is designed to replace more than 2 lakh (200,000) ageing commercial vehicles in Delhi-NCR with cleaner BS-VI compliant models and electric vehicles. This two-year initiative, implemented through the National Capital Region Planning Board (NCRPB), is projected to benefit approximately 2.07 lakh vehicle owners, including about 1.91 lakh trucks and 16,329 buses.
Incentives for Cleaner Fleets
The modernization program targets owners of BS-IV and older commercial vehicles, encouraging them to upgrade through a multi-faceted incentive structure. Beyond the 8% discount offered by participating manufacturers like Tata Motors, the Central government will provide a 5% interest subvention on vehicle loans. Beneficiaries will also receive fixed monthly fuel vouchers for five years.
State governments participating in the scheme will further sweeten the deal, offering up to a 100% concession on motor vehicle tax for ten years and waiving registration fees for eligible recipients. For electric commercial vehicles, the manufacturer's discount will be capped at the level applicable to an equivalent internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle within the same gross vehicle weight (GVW) category.
Industry Participation and Environmental Goals
Tata Motors' participation follows similar agreements signed earlier in the week by Ashok Leyland and Switch Mobility. Collectively, these three manufacturers represent approximately half of India's truck and bus market, signaling significant industry commitment to the program.
The government anticipates that this initiative will substantially accelerate fleet modernization across the National Capital Region. A primary objective is to significantly reduce vehicular emissions and improve air quality by promoting the adoption of cleaner commercial vehicles, contributing to a healthier environment for the region's residents.
