Tamil Nadu Slashes Aviation Fuel VAT; Union Minister Naidu Praises CM Vijay for Airline Cost Relief

· · 2 min read

Tamil Nadu has significantly cut Value Added Tax (VAT) on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF), reducing it to 16% at Chennai airport and 1% statewide. Union Minister Ram Mohan Naidu thanked CM Vijay, highlighting the move's role in making air travel more affordable.

In a significant boost for the aviation sector and air travelers, the Tamil Nadu government has announced a substantial reduction in Value Added Tax (VAT) on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF). The move, effective November 1, 2026, has garnered appreciation from Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, who lauded Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay for the initiative.

The revised tax structure, formalized through an extraordinary gazette notification on October 23, 2026, will see the VAT on ATF at Chennai airport decrease from 29% to 16%. For all other airports across Tamil Nadu, the tax rate has been drastically cut to just 1%. These new rates are set to remain in force until October 31, 2027.

Minister Naidu Highlights Shared Priority for Passengers

Union Minister Ram Mohan Naidu took to social media platform X to express his gratitude and commend the state government's decision. “Appreciate the Tamil Nadu Government’s decision to reduce VAT on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF), a welcome step for the aviation sector. Thank you to Hon’ble Chief Minister Thiru @TVKVijayHQ for this initiative,” Naidu posted.

He further emphasized the necessity of collaborative efforts between central and state governments to ensure air travel remains accessible and affordable for all citizens. “Making air travel more affordable requires the Centre and States to work together. Our shared priority must always be the passengers,” Naidu added, underscoring the passenger-centric approach to policy-making.

Impact on Airlines and Regional Connectivity

The reduction in ATF VAT is expected to significantly ease the operational cost burden on airlines, as aviation fuel constitutes a major component of their expenses. The 13-percentage-point cut at Chennai airport and the remarkable 28-percentage-point reduction at other state airports are particularly beneficial.

This move is anticipated to positively impact regional aviation, potentially leading to more competitive flight prices and enhanced connectivity within and from Tamil Nadu. Airlines will be required to submit a declaration along with their monthly tax returns, confirming the fuel is for domestic aviation operations, to avail of the revised rates.
