Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay concluded a successful six-day official visit to the United Kingdom, returning to Chennai on Thursday with significant investment commitments for the state. The outreach resulted in securing ₹15,300 crore (approximately $1.84 billion USD) in pledges, projected to create more than 10,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities across various sectors.
The investment agreements, signed in London on September 14, are a crucial part of Tamil Nadu's broader strategy to attract global capital and achieve its ambitious goal of becoming a $1.5-trillion economy by 2036. The state government highlighted that these commitments will bolster its efforts in manufacturing, technology, energy, and services.
Key Investment Highlights
Major proposals from leading global companies will inject capital into critical areas:
- Samvardhana Motherson International: The largest commitment came from Samvardhana Motherson International and its European and UK joint venture companies, pledging approximately ₹11,000 crore. This investment will establish facilities for design, engineering, manufacturing, assembly, and logistics, expected to generate around 7,000 jobs.
- Ernst & Young: The firm committed ₹1,000 crore to establish a Global Capability Centre (GCC) in Chennai's proposed Mount-Poonamallee GCC corridor, creating over 2,000 high-value jobs.
- Sigma Technology Group: Through its Indian entity Sriya Solutions, the Sweden-based group will expand its GCC operations in Chennai and Tiruchirappalli, adding 600 jobs in embedded systems, electrification, and industrial digitalisation.
- Wilson Power Solutions: The UK-based company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a ₹300 crore manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district. This project is set to create approximately 400 jobs for the production of efficient transformers and electrical equipment.
Strengthening Global Partnerships
During his visit, Chief Minister Vijay met with Indian High Commissioner to the UK Kumaran Periasamy to explore trade opportunities, particularly those linked to the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement. This engagement underscores Tamil Nadu’s commitment to strengthening international partnerships and integrating into global supply chains.
Beyond economic discussions, the Chief Minister also visited the iconic Silverstone Circuit. This review of its racing, safety, and operational facilities is directly connected to Tamil Nadu’s proposed Motor Sports City project, indicating a focus on diverse development avenues for the state.
