Tamil Nadu Fuel Prices Jump by ₹3/Litre for Petrol & Diesel After Elections

· · 2 min read

Petrol and diesel prices in Tamil Nadu have increased by ₹3 per litre following a nationwide revision. The hike, effective immediately, comes after a prolonged pause and is attributed to rising global crude costs and a depreciating rupee, post-state assembly elections.

Fuel Prices Surge Across Tamil Nadu

Consumers in Tamil Nadu are now paying significantly more for petrol and diesel, as state-owned oil marketing companies (OMCs) implemented a nationwide hike of ₹3 per litre for both fuels. The revised rates, effective May 15, 2026, mark the first adjustment since March 21, 2025, ending a prolonged period of stable prices.

In major cities like Chennai, Coimbatore, and Madurai, petrol is now priced at ₹103.67 per litre, while diesel costs ₹95.25 per litre. These figures reflect the base hike combined with local taxes and transportation costs.

Why the Sudden Increase?

The timing of the fuel price revision is closely linked to the electoral calendar. Prices had been held steady for several months leading up to the State Assembly elections in 2026 to avoid potential voter backlash. With the elections now concluded, the government has moved to address accumulated cost pressures.

Key Factors Driving the Hike:

  • Elevated Global Crude Prices: International crude oil prices have remained high, exacerbated by disruptions in West Asian shipping routes and ongoing tensions around the Strait of Hormuz. India imports a substantial portion of its crude, making it vulnerable to these global fluctuations.
  • Weakening Rupee: The Indian rupee's depreciation against the US dollar has increased the cost of importing crude oil. Since India imports the majority of its oil in dollars, a weaker rupee translates directly into higher procurement costs for OMCs.
  • Under-recoveries by OMCs: Oil marketing companies like Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum have been absorbing significant under-recoveries, estimated last month at approximately ₹26 per litre on petrol and ₹81.90 per litre on diesel. The combined daily under-recovery was around ₹2,400 crore, creating immense pressure on their margins.

Understanding Price Differences Across Cities

While the base hike is uniform, retail fuel prices vary across different cities and states. This disparity primarily stems from varying taxes levied by both central and state governments, which often constitute more than half of the final price paid by consumers. Additionally, transportation costs and local demand-supply dynamics also play a role in determining the final price at the pump.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas had previously indicated the significant financial strain on OMCs due to the gap between international crude prices and domestic retail rates, highlighting the unsustainability of prolonged price freezes.

This latest revision is expected to impact household budgets and transportation costs across Tamil Nadu, reflecting the complex interplay of global economics and domestic policy decisions.
