Chhattisgarh Fuel Prices Jump: Petrol, Diesel Hiked by ₹3 Per Litre

· · 2 min read

Petrol and diesel prices in Chhattisgarh have increased by ₹3 per litre following a nationwide revision by oil marketing companies on May 15. New rates are now effective in Raipur, Durg, and Raigarh after a prolonged pause.

Fuel consumers in Chhattisgarh are now facing higher costs as petrol and diesel prices have been revised upward by ₹3 per litre across India. This significant hike, implemented by oil marketing companies on May 15, marks the first increase since March 21, 2025, ending a prolonged period of stable rates.

Residents in major cities across Chhattisgarh will see the following new prices:

  • Raipur: Petrol at ₹103.56/litre, Diesel at ₹96.55/litre
  • Durg: Petrol at ₹103.56/litre, Diesel at ₹96.55/litre
  • Raigarh: Petrol at ₹103.56/litre, Diesel at ₹96.55/litre

Why the Fuel Price Hike Now?

The timing of this price adjustment is closely tied to the country's electoral calendar. Fuel prices in India have historically been kept stable during the run-up to state assembly elections to avoid potential voter backlash. With the 2026 state assembly elections now concluded, the government and oil marketing companies (OMCs) have moved to address the accumulated cost pressures.

Several factors have contributed to this increase. Global crude oil prices have remained elevated in recent months, exacerbated by disruptions to shipping routes in West Asia and ongoing tensions around the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, the Indian rupee's depreciation against the US dollar has made crude oil imports more expensive, squeezing the margins of state-owned OMCs like Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas had previously indicated substantial 'under-recoveries' by OMCs, absorbing significant costs on petrol and diesel.

How Fuel Prices Are Determined in India

The retail price of fuel in India is primarily influenced by two major variables: the international price of crude oil and the rupee-dollar exchange rate. As India imports a majority of its crude oil requirements, it is highly susceptible to global market fluctuations. A weaker rupee directly increases the cost of procuring crude, which is then passed on to consumers.

Regional Price Variations

The final retail price of petrol and diesel varies significantly across different cities and states due to varying taxes. Both central and state governments levy substantial taxes, often accounting for more than half of the consumer's payment. Furthermore, transportation costs and local demand-supply dynamics also play a role in determining the price at the pump.
