Sandra Lavie Gojkovic, a Swiss national, made a profound life change, trading her comfortable corporate career in Dubai for a mission to educate underprivileged children in a remote village in India. Her journey, driven by a search for deeper purpose beyond financial success, has transformed hundreds of lives on Sagar Island, West Bengal.
Gojkovic once enjoyed a successful corporate lifestyle, complete with international travel and financial security. However, she found herself seeking more meaningful engagement. "I realised money alone cannot make me happy. I wanted to do something that truly mattered," she shared, explaining her decision to leave her apartment, car, and well-paying job.
A Leap of Faith to Sagar Island
With just a few belongings and a one-way ticket, Gojkovic arrived in India, initially hoping to collaborate with existing non-profit organizations. However, after observing various grassroots initiatives, she felt many struggled with transparency or failed to achieve lasting impact. Rather than moving on, she decided to establish her own project.
Her biggest hurdle wasn't setting up a school, but earning the trust of the local community on Sagar Island. She spent months visiting homes, patiently explaining the transformative power of education and persuading parents to send their children to school. "People didn't trust me in the beginning. I had to visit families again and again," she recounted, emphasizing that trust requires patience and consistency.
Empowering a Community Through Education
Today, Gojkovic's initiative has blossomed into a community-driven effort. It operates a free primary school serving approximately 150 children, while an additional 120 students enrolled in government schools receive crucial tuition support and nutritious meals. Beyond academics, the project extends its reach by providing sewing training to nearly 20 women, helping them gain economic independence.
The initiative also actively conducts awareness campaigns addressing critical social issues such as child marriage, domestic violence, and human trafficking. Gojkovic firmly believes that genuine social transformation begins at the village level. "Real change starts with villages," she stated, highlighting the importance of empowering rural communities through education as a foundation for long-term development.
Despite giving up a life of material comfort, Sandra Lavie Gojkovic has no regrets. "I have everything I need. The smiles of these children give me more happiness than anything money could buy," she concluded, describing the project as her life's mission.
