Shares of Suzlon Energy Ltd and Grasim Industries Ltd saw gains of up to 5% today following the announcement of a new collaboration between the two companies. The partnership aims to develop, commercialize, and scale India's first wind turbines equipped with fully recyclable blades on a pilot basis.
Under the agreement, Suzlon, a prominent wind turbine OEM, will integrate Grasim's innovative Recyclamine technology into the manufacturing process of its wind turbine blades. Aditya Birla Renewables is set to deploy a wind turbine featuring these recyclable blades at one of its project sites, serving as a real-world demonstration of the technology's commercial viability.
Advancing Circularity in Wind Energy
Conventional wind turbine blades are typically constructed from thermoset composite materials, which pose significant challenges for recycling at the end of their operational life. This often leads to disposal in landfills or incineration, creating environmental concerns.
Grasim's Recyclamine epoxy technology offers a breakthrough solution. Blades manufactured with this technology can be chemically recycled, allowing for the recovery of valuable composite constituents. These recovered materials can then be reused in new applications, aligning with circular economy principles.
Girish Tanti, Co-Founder at Suzlon Group, stated, "This partnership brings together innovation and scale to accelerate material circularity, with the potential to enable significant CO₂ savings. It is another step towards ensuring that every turbine we build delivers lasting value for both the planet and future generations." He added that Suzlon aims to make all future turbines recyclable within the next three to four years, building on the low carbon footprint of its S144 platform.
The companies will also explore broader commercialization opportunities for Recyclamine-enabled recyclable blade technology across India and other mutually agreed markets. This initiative is expected to minimize waste, reduce environmental impact, and enhance the overall sustainability profile of wind energy projects.
