Fidelity International Boosts India Investment After US Midterm Election Uncertainty

· · 2 min read

Fidelity International fund manager George Efstathopoulos is increasing allocations to Indian equities and Asian technology stocks. This diversification strategy follows market volatility triggered by uncertainties after the recent US midterm elections.

Fidelity International Shifts Portfolio Amid US Political Volatility

In response to market uncertainties following the recent US midterm elections, Fidelity International's multi-asset portfolio manager, George Efstathopoulos, is strategically rebalancing his portfolio. Efstathopoulos, who oversees approximately $3 billion in assets across Fidelity International's Growth & Income funds, is significantly increasing Fidelity India investment exposure and expanding holdings in technology stocks across Asia.

The move comes as political uncertainty in the US has reportedly widened the gap between market valuations and underlying business fundamentals. Efstathopoulos views this disconnect as an opportunity to acquire quality stocks at more attractive prices.

Diversification and Opportunity in Emerging Markets

As part of his diversification strategy, Efstathopoulos is reducing investments in traditionally defensive sectors, such as utilities, and redirecting capital towards growth-oriented assets. India, in particular, is attracting interest due to its relatively lower exposure to disruptions seen in certain technology segments elsewhere, making it an appealing destination for portfolio diversification.

His investment approach aligns with a broader sentiment among investors who remain optimistic about the earnings potential of artificial intelligence-related companies, despite ongoing concerns regarding elevated technology spending. The Fidelity Funds - Global Multi Asset Growth & Income Fund, one of the schemes under his management, has delivered approximately 9% returns year-to-date, placing it in the 80th percentile among comparable funds, according to Bloomberg data.

Bullish Outlook on Specific Tech Segments

Within the technology sector, Efstathopoulos maintains a particularly positive outlook on memory-chip companies and Nasdaq-listed stocks. He points to robust earnings reported by major hyperscalers, a favorable outlook for the memory semiconductor cycle, and relatively attractive valuations as key factors supporting his bullish stance.

Navigating Post-Election Market Reactions

Global markets reacted sharply after the Democrats secured majorities in both chambers of the US Congress, prompting investors to reassess the potential implications for policy and economic stability. While Nasdaq 100 futures initially dropped, bargain hunters quickly stepped in, allowing for some recovery. Efstathopoulos's strategy reflects a proactive approach to navigating these post-election market dynamics, seeking opportunities created by volatility and political shifts.
