The initial public offering (IPO) for Sunshine Pictures, a prominent film-making and distribution company, commenced its subscription period on Tuesday, August 18. Investors have the opportunity to bid for shares within a price band of Rs 342-360 apiece, with a minimum application of 41 equity shares. The issue is slated to close on Thursday, August 20, aiming to raise a total of Rs 282 crore.

IPO Structure and Utilization

The Sunshine Pictures IPO comprises a fresh issuance of 48,00,034 equity shares, targeting Rs 173 crore, alongside an offer-for-sale (OFS) of up to 30,37,157 equity shares, valued at Rs 109 crore. The net proceeds from the fresh issue are designated for funding working capital requirements and general corporate purposes.

Company Profile and Financials

Established in 2007, Sunshine Pictures operates as a technology-driven content creator, specializing in the entire lifecycle of films, TV serials, and web series—from script development and production to marketing and distribution. The company is noted for its innovative commercial films and intellectual property creation.

Ahead of its public offering, Sunshine Pictures successfully raised Rs 84.64 crore from nine anchor investors, allocating 23,51,140 equity shares at Rs 360 each. Notable anchor investors included Innovate Vision, Khandelwal Finance, and Arnesta Global Opportunities Fund.

For the financial year ended March 31, 2025, the company reported a net profit of Rs 40.02 crore on a revenue of Rs 76.27 crore. In the preceding financial year (2024-25), it posted a net profit of Rs 34.46 crore with a revenue of Rs 105.80 crore. At the current valuations, Sunshine Pictures commands a market capitalization slightly exceeding Rs 1,120 crore.

Allocation and Grey Market Premium (GMP)

The IPO allocation reserves 50 percent of the net offer for qualified institutional bidders (QIBs), while non-institutional investors (NIIs) are allocated 15 percent. Retail investors will receive 35 percent of the reservation. Market reports indicate a grey market premium (GMP) of Rs 68-70 per share, suggesting potential listing gains of approximately 18-19 percent for investors.

Analyst Recommendations: A Mixed Bag

Brokerage firms have offered diverse opinions on the Sunshine Pictures IPO:

  • SBI Securities: 'Avoid'
Citing high uncertainty regarding project success and significant working capital needs, SBI Securities noted negative revenue, EBITDA, and PAT CAGR over FY24-FY26. While acknowledging upcoming projects, they recommend 'AVOID' due to dependency on audience acceptance and box office performance.
  • Master Capital Services: 'Subscribe for long-term'
Master Capital Services views Sunshine Pictures as well-positioned to capitalize on growing demand for diverse and digital-first content. They highlighted the company's experience in film, television, and web series production, its technology-driven approach, and a strong content pipeline, recommending a 'long-term investment'.
  • BP Equities: 'Avoid'
BP Equities expressed caution due to the lumpy nature of the business, where revenue and earnings are highly dependent on project execution and content success. Despite growth potential from the upcoming pipeline, limited earnings visibility led to an 'avoid' recommendation.
  • Ventura Securities: 'Subscribe'
Ventura Securities provided a 'subscribe' rating, emphasizing Sunshine Pictures' established track record with 13 films, two web series, and three TV serials. They noted the company's balanced approach of self-financed and co-produced projects, along with an in-house post-production pipeline.
  • Swastika Investmart: 'Neutral'
Swastika pointed out a sharp surge in EBITDA margin in FY26, attributing it mainly to the capitalization of production costs for unreleased projects rather than genuine operational efficiency. While operational return ratios and low leverage justify a slight premium, they warned of limited margin of safety given content release delays or subdued viewer traction, marking it suitable as a 'high-risk, tactical exposure'.
  • SMC Global Securities: 'Neutral'
SMC Global Securities sees Sunshine Pictures as well-positioned for medium-term growth due to experienced promoters and a diversified content pipeline. However, they cautioned that earnings remain exposed to unpredictable audience preferences, box-office performance, and dependence on creative talent, leading to a 'neutral' rating.
