Viral Post Ignites Work-Life Balance Debate
A Reddit post by a startup employee has gone viral, fueling a heated discussion about workplace boundaries and work-life balance. The employee, who stated he earns ₹23,000 (approximately $275 USD) per month, detailed an incident where his employer allegedly contacted his mother to question his professionalism after he fell asleep following a demanding workday and extended hours to meet a deadline.
According to the post, the employee worked from 9 AM to 6 PM, then continued late into the night due to an urgent project. He claims his team was expected to remain available until around 2 AM. After experiencing severe eye strain, he took medication and went to sleep.
Employer Allegedly Questions Professionalism
Later that night, the company reportedly initiated a WhatsApp group call. The phone rang repeatedly until the employee's mother answered, as he was asleep. Instead of simply inquiring about his whereabouts, the callers allegedly questioned his professionalism directly to his mother. "They told my mother that this is a full-time role, asked how I could be sleeping, and said it was a sign of unprofessionalism," the employee wrote.
The incident left the employee deeply uncomfortable. While acknowledging that urgent deadlines can sometimes necessitate working beyond regular hours, he argued that involving his family crossed a significant professional boundary. He sought advice from fellow Reddit users on whether his reaction was an overreaction or if resignation was a viable option.
Public Outcry and Calls for Change
The post quickly garnered hundreds of comments, with many users sharply criticizing the startup's alleged conduct. Numerous respondents argued that expecting employees to be available until 2 AM after a full workday amounted to exploitation, especially given the employee's modest monthly salary.
One user commented, "No, they are the one who has been unprofessional. First of all, a professional way of communication is through Teams or email. Better quit and start looking for better jobs." Another added, "My friend. My labour gets paid more than you and they get lunch and tea and one hour break from a 9-hour workday. You're being exploited." The widespread sentiment highlighted a broader concern about poor work culture prevalent in many companies, particularly startups, and the importance of introspection regarding pay and work-life balance.
