Spain's Hydrogen Bus Trial Achieves 1,000 Km Range, Challenges Battery Limitations

A new hydrogen-powered coach in Spain, built by Irizar, has demonstrated a 1,000-kilometer range on a single tank. Undergoing passenger trials with operator Alsa in Madrid, this vehicle aims to prove hydrogen's viability for long-distance public transport.

A groundbreaking trial in Spain is challenging the dominance of battery-electric vehicles in long-distance public transport. A hydrogen-powered coach, manufactured by Spanish firm Irizar, has successfully completed passenger trials in the Madrid region, showcasing an impressive range of over 1,000 kilometers on a single tank.

Operated by Alsa, the trials are specifically designed to test the vehicle on demanding regional and intercity routes, moving beyond the typical urban commutes where most hydrogen buses currently operate. This demonstration comes as Europe intensifies its investment in hydrogen infrastructure to meet ambitious climate goals.

Boosting Long-Distance Mobility

Range anxiety and lengthy charging times remain significant hurdles for battery-electric buses on extended routes. While battery technology excels in predictable city transport with overnight charging, regional and interstate operators face challenges with turnaround times and limited fast-charging infrastructure.

The Irizar hydrogen coach directly addresses these concerns by offering a substantial driving range of over 1,000 km and a rapid refueling time of approximately 15–20 minutes. This allows operators to maintain schedules comparable to conventional diesel coaches without prolonged service interruptions, emitting only water vapor from its tailpipe.

At the core of the vehicle's capability is a 190-kilowatt hydrogen fuel-cell system developed by Bosch, integrated with an efficient electric drivetrain.

Hydrogen: A Complementary Solution

This Spanish trial reflects an evolving perspective within Europe's clean transport strategy. Instead of positioning hydrogen as a direct competitor to battery-electric vehicles, manufacturers increasingly view it as a complementary technology. This is particularly true for applications where battery weight becomes prohibitive or charging downtime is commercially impractical, such as heavy trucks, coaches, and long-haul buses.

As European nations work to decarbonize public transport while preserving operational flexibility, this distinction gains importance. Madrid, for instance, has already invested in hydrogen refueling infrastructure, though earlier hydrogen buses in the city typically offered ranges around 280 km, making Irizar's new coach a significant leap forward.

Despite facing criticism over high fuel costs and limited infrastructure, proponents argue that long-haul segments represent the strongest use cases for hydrogen due to their demand for extensive operating hours, minimal downtime, and extended driving range. The outcomes of the Spanish trial will be closely observed by transport operators across Europe, potentially strengthening the case for hydrogen in sectors where batteries still struggle to match the operational convenience of traditional diesel.
