Arundhati Bhattacharya, President and CEO of Salesforce South Asia, has underscored the immense potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to transform India's healthcare sector. Speaking on the country's rapid AI adoption, Bhattacharya detailed how AI will not only enhance patient outcomes but also drive efficiency in healthcare delivery.
AI's Impact on Health and Medical Innovation
Bhattacharya recalled a poignant observation from a pediatrician's waiting room: only a third of human diseases currently have a known cure. This stark reality, she argues, highlights the urgent need for innovation in pharmaceuticals and medical processes. AI is positioned to bridge this gap by accelerating the development of new solutions and making healthcare less invasive.
"The use of AI is going to make things far better for human health and help ensure that we live long and healthy lives," Bhattacharya stated, emphasizing technology's role in improving the quality of life.
She pointed to existing advancements, such as robotics and automation, which have already dramatically reduced hospital stays for various operations. The continued integration of AI promises further breakthroughs, offering hope for better management of illnesses and a healthier future for humanity.
India's AI Adoption Landscape and Challenges
While sectors like BFSI (Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance), retail, automotive, education, and real estate are rapidly embracing AI, Bhattacharya noted a slower pace in some traditional legacy industries in India. This lag is primarily attributed to the burden of existing systems and the complexities of integrating new technology with established workflows and large workforces.
A significant hurdle identified by Bhattacharya is the lingering concern over cloud security, particularly within the public sector. She countered this apprehension, asserting that cloud providers, whose core business is security, often offer more robust protection than on-premises systems managed by companies not specialized in IT. The substantial computing power and storage required for advanced AI, including generative and agentic AI, make on-premises solutions prohibitively expensive, creating a high barrier to entry.
Salesforce's Evolving AI Strategy
Salesforce is strategically infusing AI across its entire application suite, from sales and service to marketing and analytics. This integration aims to provide customers with deeper, more immediate insights and enhanced capabilities. For instance, AI can now analyze sales dashboards to identify the most promising opportunities, significantly improving efficiency.
The Rise of Agentic AI
Agentic AI, which grants systems the ability to work independently within defined parameters, is central to Salesforce's future roadmap. These agents can automate responses and trigger workflows, drastically reducing customer wait times in call centers and streamlining complex tasks like booking doctor appointments. Bhattacharya envisions a collaborative future where AI agents handle repetitive tasks, freeing human employees for more complex issues and enhancing overall customer satisfaction.
Measuring AI Investment Returns
The return on investment (ROI) from AI, according to Bhattacharya, extends beyond mere quantitative metrics. While AI can boost sales and market share, its qualitative benefits, such as improved customer satisfaction and Net Promoter Scores (NPS), are equally vital. Reduced wait times, for example, directly translate to happier customers, which in turn can drive long-term business growth.
India's Role in Salesforce's Global Growth
India remains a critical market for Salesforce, experiencing rapid growth. The company's workforce in India has expanded from approximately 2,500 to over 17,000 employees, with operations now spanning seven cities. Salesforce continues to invest significantly in the region, focusing on multilingual AI capabilities, local cloud infrastructure, and enterprise automation to support India's digital transformation journey.
