Reliance Jio to Build Sovereign LEO Satellite Network for Pan-India Connectivity

· · 2 min read

Reliance Jio announced plans to develop a Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation to bring connectivity to India's remotest regions. This initiative includes building ground stations and partnering with global providers to accelerate service rollout.

Reliance Jio is aiming to connect every corner of India, including its most remote villages, island communities, and border outposts, through a new Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation. The ambitious plan was unveiled by Akash Ambani during the Reliance Industries Annual General Meeting (AGM) in 2026, marking a significant step towards bolstering India's digital infrastructure.

Ambani emphasized that while Jio has connected India on the ground, the next frontier is connecting the nation from the skies. This LEO satellite network is designed to bridge existing connectivity gaps where traditional terrestrial networks cannot reach, ensuring comprehensive digital inclusion across the country.

Dual Approach: Sovereign Development and Global Partnerships

Jio's strategy involves a dual approach to establish its LEO satellite capabilities. The company is actively evaluating and developing a sovereign LEO satellite constellation specifically for India. Simultaneously, it plans to partner with leading global constellation providers, leasing satellite capacity to expedite service availability.

This combination will allow Jio to quickly meet immediate connectivity demands while laying the groundwork for a robust, long-term Indian satellite broadband platform with global scalability. The company is also committed to building its own ground station infrastructure within India, which will support both its future satellites and those of its partner constellations.

Strengthening India's Self-Reliance in Space

The development of an end-to-end satellite broadband ecosystem, from space to ground, is set to significantly strengthen India's 'Atmanirbharata' (self-reliance) in the space sector. This initiative positions India firmly on the global map for satellite broadband services, showcasing the nation's growing capabilities in advanced communication technologies.

Akash Ambani highlighted that these efforts underscore Jio's continuous innovation and commitment to India's digital future, suggesting that the company's most impactful contributions are yet to come.
