Mumbai, India – Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) convened its 49th Annual General Meeting (AGM) today, where Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani marked significant milestones for two of the group's flagship businesses: the completion of 10 years for Reliance Jio and 20 years for Reliance Retail.
Ambani hailed both entities as industry leaders, underscoring their profound impact on India's economic and digital landscape. "Jio completes 10 years of stellar success. Reliance Retail completes 20 years as a trailblazer. In both businesses, we remain the unbeatable Number One," he stated, emphasizing the group's commitment to serving nearly 1.5 billion Indians.
Jio's Decade of Digital Transformation and Growth
Since its launch on September 5, 2016, Reliance Jio Infocomm has dramatically reshaped India's telecommunications sector. Mukesh Ambani highlighted Jio's role in making high-speed data affordable and voice calls free, transforming India into the world's largest consumer of mobile data. This disruption drove down data costs from approximately ₹250 per GB to less than ₹10 per GB, accelerating digital adoption across the nation.
Jio Chairman Akash Ambani further detailed the telecom operator's impressive growth, confirming that Jio's subscriber base has now surpassed 524 million. The company's 5G user base alone has exceeded 268 million, making it the largest for any single-country operator outside China. During the fiscal year 2026, Jio added 77 million net subscribers, solidifying its market leadership.
Global Recognition for Innovation
Mukesh Ambani also proudly noted Jio Platforms' rapid ascent in global innovation rankings. According to the latest WIPO report, Jio Platforms has jumped from rank 340 to 20 in just one year in innovation velocity through patents, making it the only Indian company in the global top 20.
Ambani's Vision for India's AI Leadership
A significant portion of Ambani's address focused on the future of artificial intelligence and India's role within this evolving technological frontier. He articulated a clear vision for India to transition from being a mere consumer of AI technologies to a global creator, adopter, and leader.
"India should not be a mere consumer of AI created elsewhere. It should be a creator, adopter and global leader in AI," Ambani asserted.
This strategic focus on AI reflects Reliance's broader ambitions to expand its digital and technology arm beyond connectivity into areas like entertainment, cloud computing, commerce, and enterprise services. The group's commitment extends to its shareholders, with Ambani reiterating a "deep and sacred" relationship founded on trust and shared growth, a principle he attributed to Dhirubhai Ambani.
As Jio enters its second decade and Reliance Retail celebrates its twentieth year, the AGM underscored the Ambani family's continued drive to innovate and lead India's digital and retail revolutions, with artificial intelligence now at the forefront of their strategic outlook.
