RBI Proposes Uniform Loan Rates for Banks, NBFCs to Boost Transparency

· · 2 min read

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has proposed a standardized framework for loan interest rates across all regulated entities, including banks and NBFCs. This aims to enhance transparency and consistency in loan pricing, making it easier for borrowers to compare products.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is moving to standardize the regulatory framework governing interest rates on loans across all regulated financial entities, including commercial banks and non-banking financial companies (NBFCs). This significant proposal, announced by RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra during the August monetary policy decisions, is designed to enhance transparency and consistency in how loan products are priced.

Currently, banks and NBFCs operate under differing regulatory structures for determining and disclosing loan interest rates. This disparity often creates confusion for borrowers, making it challenging to effectively compare loan offerings from various institutions.

Boosting Transparency and Fairness in Lending

Governor Malhotra emphasized that the central bank's objective is to create a more uniform regulatory approach as India's credit market continues to evolve. The harmonization effort is expected to simplify the lending landscape, providing greater clarity for consumers and fostering a fairer environment in retail lending practices.

The proposed changes build upon the RBI's ongoing initiatives to strengthen transparency. In recent years, the central bank has introduced measures such as mandating external benchmark-linked lending rates (EBLR) for specific retail and MSME floating-rate loans offered by banks, aiming to improve the transmission of monetary policy benefits to borrowers.

Impact on Borrowers and the Financial System

Once detailed operational guidelines are issued, the standardized framework is anticipated to reduce information asymmetry for borrowers. This means individuals and businesses will have a clearer understanding of loan costs, enabling more informed decision-making and promoting healthier competition among lenders.

Beyond loan rates, the RBI also announced revised deposit rate frameworks effective October 1, 2026, aimed at making fixed deposit pricing more transparent and consistent across banks. These amendments, which apply to various banking institutions, seek to eliminate differential rates for similar deposits based solely on booking location and require public disclosure of deposit interest rate schedules.

The RBI maintains that India's macroeconomic fundamentals remain robust, supported by strong growth, stable inflation, a healthy financial system, and comfortable foreign exchange reserves. The push for greater transparency in lending is a strategic step to further bolster confidence in the country's financial ecosystem.
