The Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) elections are often dismissed as mere campus politics, yet they consistently serve as a crucial proving ground for India's future leaders. Established in 1949, with its first elections held in 1954, DUSU's evolution saw a shift to direct elections, broadening student participation. - Arun Jaitley: A B.Com graduate from Shri Ram College of Commerce and later an LLB from the Department of Law, Jaitley became DUSU President in 1974 as an ABVP candidate during the politically charged Emergency era. His student activism was marked by strong opposition to the Indira Gandhi regime. He later joined the BJP and rose to become Union Finance Minister, playing a key role in economic reforms like the Goods and Services Tax (GST).
- Ajay Maken: Nearly a decade after Jaitley, Maken became DUSU President in 1985 as an NSUI candidate. He is notably the only B.Sc Chemistry (Hons) student to have held this post. Maken later joined the Congress party, serving as its general secretary and holding portfolios such as Housing and Urban Poverty in the Union government.
- Rekha Gupta: Gupta served as DUSU President in 1996 as an ABVP candidate. She subsequently rose through the ranks within the BJP, holding significant organizational positions within the party.
- Alka Lamba: Winning the DUSU presidential election in 1995 as an NSUI candidate, Lamba went on to become a Delhi MLA and has held various organizational positions within different political parties.
- Nupur Sharma: Sharma became DUSU President in 2008 as an ABVP candidate. She later gained prominence as a BJP spokesperson.
