RBI Measures Attract $20.7 Billion Foreign Capital Inflow in Weeks

· · 2 min read

India's Reserve Bank implemented special measures on June 5, 2026, leading to a substantial $20.7 billion foreign currency influx. Commercial banks primarily secured these funds through FCNR(B) deposits and other channels, bolstering India's external sector resilience.

A targeted intervention by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has triggered a massive inflow of foreign capital, with commercial banks attracting over $20.7 billion in combined foreign currency inflows in just over a month. This surge, recorded between June 8 and July 17, 2026, follows a package of special measures introduced by the central bank on June 5, 2026. These initiatives aim to bolster India's balance of payments and reinforce the nation's external sector resilience.

Key Channels for Foreign Capital Inflow

The bulk of this new capital, a staggering $17.4 billion, arrived through fresh Foreign Currency Non-Resident (Bank), or FCNR(B), deposits. Non-resident Indians (NRIs) utilized this window to securely park foreign currency assets, encouraged by the RBI's favorable terms for converting these funds into rupees.

Beyond NRI deposits, corporate and institutional channels also contributed significantly. Commercial banks successfully mobilized $1.97 billion through Overseas Foreign Currency Borrowings, while External Commercial Borrowings brought in an additional $1.342 billion during the same five-week period.

RBI's Strategic Intervention

The RBI operationalized a concessional swap facility on June 8, 2026. This crucial step effectively insulated overseas capital from volatile exchange rate risks, establishing a steady pipeline of dollar inflows into the domestic banking system. Reviewing data provided by authorized dealer banks, the central bank noted the immediate efficacy of this framework. The RBI stated, "The swap facility has seen avid interest and attracted steady forex inflows since June 8, 2026."

Timelines for Continued Stability

To ensure prolonged stability, the strategic timelines for these facilities are staggered. The concessional swap window for the high-performing FCNR(B) deposits is scheduled to remain accessible until September 30, 2026. Meanwhile, the operational runway for both Overseas Foreign Currency Borrowings and External Commercial Borrowings will extend further, remaining available until December 31, 2026.
