The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has unveiled a significant doctoral fellowship program, committing ₹245 crore over five years. This initiative, dubbed the AICTE Innovation and Entrepreneurship Doctoral Fellowship Programme (AIEDFP), is designed to empower 150 PhD scholars whose research can translate into tangible innovations, startups, and practical solutions for societal challenges.
Boosting Problem-Driven Research
AICTE Chairman Prof. Yogesh Singh and Member Secretary Prof. Shyama Rath officially launched the AIEDFP. The core objective is to promote “problem-driven, application-oriented doctoral research” with a strong emphasis on measurable outcomes such as technology transfer, commercialization, and significant societal impact.
Financial Support for Scholars
- The AIEDFP will provide support for up to five years, contingent on eligibility and satisfactory research progress.
- Selected scholars will receive a monthly stipend of ₹60,000, plus applicable House Rent Allowance (HRA), for the initial three years.
- For the subsequent two years, the fellowship amount will increase to ₹70,000 per month, along with HRA.
Beyond the monthly stipends, each scholar is eligible for an Innovation Grant of up to ₹10 lakh. This grant is intended to cover expenses related to prototype development, rigorous testing and validation, essential field trials, data collection, travel, and other research activities necessary to transform academic research into deployable, real-world solutions.
Connecting Research with Industry
The program actively encourages both technological and non-technological innovation, fostering multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary research that addresses national and global priorities. A key aspect of the AIEDFP is its focus on connecting doctoral researchers with industry partners, emerging startups, established research organizations, and incubators.
Industry collaborators are invited to contribute by providing problem statements, infrastructure, valuable resources, relevant datasets, and mentorship. Furthermore, scholars have the option to undertake industrial exposure for a period of six to 12 months, offering invaluable opportunities in research and development, prototype development, testing, validation, field trials, and data collection within an industry setting.
AICTE emphasizes that this program aims to create a clear and direct pathway from advanced doctoral research to the successful generation of patents, functional prototypes, effective technology transfer, commercialization efforts, and the establishment of new entrepreneurial ventures.
