The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced significant changes to its central board, appointing former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chair S. Key Appointments Bolster RBI's Central Board

In a statement released on Thursday, the RBI confirmed the Central Government's decision to appoint Somanath Sreedhara Panicker (S. Somanath) as a part-time, non-official director. His extensive background in science and technology is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the apex bank's governance.

Concurrently, Anand Mahindra, a prominent figure in Indian industry, was reappointed to the board. His continued presence ensures continuity and leverages his vast experience in business and economics, which has been valuable in guiding the RBI's strategic direction.

Composition and Role of the RBI Board

The central board of directors is responsible for governing the affairs of the Reserve Bank of India, in accordance with the RBI Act. Members are typically appointed or nominated for four-year terms. The board comprises both official directors, including the Governor and up to four Deputy Governors, and non-official directors nominated by the government from diverse fields, alongside government officials and representatives from local boards.

As of these announcements, the board's strength stands at 11 members. This includes Governor Sanjay Malhotra and Deputy Governors Swaminathan J, Poonam Gupta, Shirish Chandra Murmu, and Rohit Jain. The non-official directors now include the newly appointed S. Somanath and reappointed Anand Mahindra, alongside existing members such as former Deputy Comptroller & Auditor General Revathy Iyer, Professor Sachin Chaturvedi, Anuradha Thakur, and former secretary Sanjay Lohiya.

These strategic appointments underscore the government's commitment to bringing diverse expertise to the central bank's highest decision-making body, ensuring robust oversight and informed policy formulation for India's financial sector.
