A 37-year-old man from Pune's Katraj area, Shailendra Sanjay Tilekar, reportedly lost a significant sum of ₹3,49,989 from his bank account after falling victim to an online traffic violation phishing scam. The incident, which occurred between October 16 and October 26, began when Tilekar received a fraudulent message.
The message falsely claimed that Tilekar had violated traffic rules and needed to pay a fine. Upon clicking a deceptive payment link embedded in the message, his mobile phone allegedly facilitated multiple unauthorized transactions. These transactions swiftly drained nearly ₹3.5 lakh from his bank account without his consent.
Police Launch Investigation into Phishing Incident
Following Tilekar's complaint, an official offense has been registered at the Bharatiya Vidyapeeth police station in Pune. The case has been filed under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act, indicating the severity and digital nature of the crime.
Police officials confirmed that investigations are currently underway to trace the perpetrators behind this sophisticated phishing attack. This incident serves as a stark reminder for the public to exercise extreme caution when receiving unsolicited messages, especially those demanding immediate payment or prompting clicks on suspicious links.
Protecting Against Online Scams
- Verify Sender: Always check the sender's identity for any official communication.
- Official Channels: Use official government portals or apps to check for traffic violations, rather than relying on links in SMS messages.
- Beware of Urgency: Scammers often create a sense of urgency to pressure victims into quick actions.
- Do Not Click Unknown Links: Never click on payment links from unverified sources.
- Report Suspicious Activity: Report any suspicious messages or online fraud attempts to the cybercrime authorities immediately.
