Rahul Gandhi's Call to Action Amid Festive Season
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has appealed to participants of the INDIA bloc's mass rally at Delhi's historic Ramlila Maidan to support local merchants by purchasing festive items from neighborhood markets. The call to action, delivered via a video message on X (formerly Twitter), encourages attendees to balance political activism with local commerce, especially during the ongoing festive season, which includes Diwali, Chhath, and Bhai Dooj.
Gandhi stated, "Tomorrow, lakhs of people are coming to Delhi for the Ramlila March. It is the festive season... Along with protesting, marching, and attending the rally, do a little shopping too. It will help our local traders." He emphasized that the large turnout could provide a significant economic boost for small vendors.
Addressing Market Concerns Over Rally Impact
Gandhi's appeal comes in response to concerns raised by several central Delhi market associations, including the Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) and the Federation of Sadar Bazar Traders Association. These groups had previously requested the opposition coalition to defer the demonstration, fearing that large-scale traffic diversions and security restrictions just before Diwali could jeopardize peak festive business, which generates substantial revenue for local shopkeepers.
Dismissing assertions that the political gathering would inflict economic harm on nearby business hubs like Chandni Chowk, Sadar Bazar, and Connaught Place, Gandhi labeled such concerns as political rumors. He asserted, "I know that our rally will not hurt the traders. The BJP is spreading rumors because it is scared."
The Rally's Dual Purpose and Logistics
The INDIA bloc organized the rally at Ramlila Maidan primarily to voice concerns over electoral roll revisions and other key political issues. Authorities have deployed extra traffic personnel and security details to manage the anticipated dual flow of political marchers and seasonal holiday shoppers across central Delhi, aiming to mitigate potential disruptions while facilitating both protest and commerce.
