Four distinguished figures from India's industrial landscape were recently recognized with the esteemed Padma Awards by President Droupadi Murmu. The ceremony, held on May 25, saw Uday Kotak, Ashok Khade, Satyanarayan Nuwal, and the late TT Jagannathan celebrated for their profound impact across various sectors.
This year, a total of 131 individuals received Padma awards, comprising five Padma Vibhushan, 13 Padma Bhushan, and 113 Padma Shri recipients. Among them, Uday Kotak was awarded the Padma Bhushan, one of India's highest civilian honors, while Ashok Khade, Satyanarayan Nuwal, and TT Jagannathan (posthumously) were conferred with the Padma Shri.
Uday Kotak: Architect of a Financial Empire
Uday Kotak, founder of Kotak Mahindra Bank, has been a pivotal force in shaping India's banking and financial services sector for nearly four decades. Under his leadership, the Kotak Mahindra group expanded into a diversified financial conglomerate, offering comprehensive solutions from banking and asset management to insurance and investment banking.
Kotak served as the bank's Managing Director and CEO until September 2023, transitioning to a Non-Executive Non-Independent Director role. His influence extends beyond his organization, having served as President of the Confederation of Indian Industry and as a member of international advisory panels.
Ashok Khade: A Journey from Adversity to Industrial Leadership
Ashok Khade, a recipient of the Padma Shri, embodies a remarkable journey from acute poverty to establishing a globally competitive industrial enterprise. Born into a Dalit family in rural Maharashtra, Khade's early life was marked by severe financial hardship.
He co-founded DAS Offshore Engineering Private Limited in 1993, a company that has grown to employ approximately 4,000 workers in the demanding offshore oil and gas sector and shipbuilding. Khade dedicated his award to his mother and family, highlighting his perseverance and commitment to social impact.
Satyanarayan Nuwal: Explosives Magnate and Philanthropist
Satyanarayan Nuwal, founder of Solar Industries India Ltd, was honored with the Padma Shri for his achievements in industry and philanthropy. Nuwal's company is recognized as India's largest producer of industrial explosives and explosive initiating systems.
His story is one of overcoming significant challenges, including dropping out of school after Class 10 due to financial constraints and reportedly sleeping at railway stations in search of livelihood. Today, Nuwal's entrepreneurial success is matched by his known philanthropic endeavors, making his rise truly inspiring.
TT Jagannathan (Posthumous): Innovator in Household Technology
The late TT Jagannathan was posthumously awarded the Padma Shri for his transformative role in the TTK group, bringing simple yet impactful technologies to Indian households. His innovative approach, often stemming from his association with the cooking business, reshaped the company's trajectory.
After returning to India in 1973 with a PhD in operations research from Cornell University, Jagannathan quickly turned around Tamil Nadu Printers & Traders Pvt Ltd. He became Managing Director of the TTK group in 1974 at just 26, leading it to become a prominent manufacturer of pressure cookers and contraceptives. His book, Disrupt and Conquer, chronicles the company's journey to becoming a billion-dollar enterprise through what he termed “a huge dose of common sense.”
