PNB Shares Poised for Rebound Amid Short-Covering, Says ICICI Securities Expert

· · 3 min read

ICICI Securities' Jay Thakkar suggests Punjab National Bank (PNB) shares could see a near-term rebound due to ongoing short-covering in PSU banking stocks. PNB has outperformed rivals recently, with Rs 107 identified as a key support level.

Punjab National Bank (PNB) shares are showing strong signs of a potential near-term rebound, according to market expert Jay Thakkar of ICICI Securities. The public sector lender has recently emerged as an outperformer among its peers, driven by significant short-covering in PSU banking stocks.

PNB's Technical Setup and Key Levels

Thakkar, who serves as Head Derivatives & Quant Research - Vice President at ICICI Securities, emphasized that PNB's stock remains "technically well-placed" as long as crucial support levels are protected. He highlighted the Rs 107 mark as a critical line in the sand for traders.

"Till Rs 107 levels are held, there is high probability it can bounce till Rs 117 to Rs 120 range," Thakkar stated, responding to a viewer query.

He noted that a considerable volume of "shorts"—bearish positions—had accumulated in several public sector banking names. The recent upward movement in these stocks, including PNB, suggests that many of these bearish bets are now being unwound, contributing to price appreciation.

Shifting Leadership in Banking Stocks

For a significant period during the recent Nifty Bank recovery, private sector banks were the primary drivers of growth. However, this trend appears to be shifting. Thakkar pointed out that private lenders have shown signs of reversal this week, while PSU banking stocks, after a period of relative pause, are now beginning to outperform.

This rotation of leadership within the banking sector positions PNB favorably, as it is currently demonstrating robust relative strength.

Why Short-Covering Fuels PNB's Performance

Short-covering events can often trigger swift upward price movements, particularly in liquid and sentiment-sensitive counters like PSU banks. Thakkar identified PNB as "one of the stocks which is outperforming as of now in past one week to 10 days," attributing this largely to the ongoing short-covering.

For investors and traders, maintaining above the Rs 107 support level is crucial for PNB to sustain its momentum and potentially reach the Rs 117-120 target band. A failure to hold this support, however, would signal a weakening of the current bullish setup.

Broader Market Implications

This positive assessment of PNB's prospects comes amidst a cautious broader market environment, with banking shares generally under pressure. PNB's standout relative strength suggests that if public sector banks continue to attract buying interest while private lenders consolidate, PNB could remain a focus for traders seeking near-term alpha.
