Delhi Air Customs officers intercepted two passengers arriving from Doha at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport on September 2, 2026, leading to the significant seizure of 484 silver coins and one gold coin.
The recovered items, collectively valued at Rs 47.16 lakh, also included 134 silver coins that the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has confirmed to possess archaeological significance. The passengers were attempting to clear the substantial quantity of gold and silver without proper declaration.
Details of the Seizure at IGI Airport
The interception occurred when the two individuals, who had arrived on Flight No. QR578 from Doha, were stopped by Air Customs officials. A thorough examination of their baggage revealed a total of 20.883 kilograms of gold and silver in coin form.
The seized consignment comprised 484 silver coins and a single gold coin. Crucially, 134 of the silver coins were specifically noted by the ASI for their apparent historical or archaeological value, adding a layer of cultural heritage concern to the smuggling attempt.
Customs Act Invoked
Customs officials proceeded to seize the goods under Section 110 of the Customs Act, 1962, which grants them the authority to confiscate items suspected of being smuggled. This incident highlights ongoing efforts by authorities to curb the illicit movement of valuable goods, including those of historical importance, through India's international borders.
