PM Modi Reviews ₹30,000 Crore Infra Projects, Urges Faster Solar & Waste Management

· · 3 min read

Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the 51st PRAGATI meeting, reviewing seven major infrastructure projects valued at ₹30,000 crore. He emphasized accelerating rooftop solar installations and improving urban waste management, while also addressing project delays.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently presided over the 51st PRAGATI meeting, an ICT-enabled platform designed to monitor and expedite critical government infrastructure and governance initiatives. During the session, he reviewed seven significant projects collectively valued at approximately ₹30,000 crore, spanning the Railways, Power, and Road sectors across nine Indian states.

A central theme of the meeting was the urgent need for faster execution and enhanced coordination between central and state authorities, particularly for flagship schemes. PM Modi highlighted concerns regarding delays in public infrastructure projects, cautioning that such hold-ups not only inflate costs but also postpone the delivery of developmental benefits to citizens. He stressed that “Every delay has a direct impact on people’s lives, regional growth and public resources,” urging ministries and states to adopt a proactive, time-bound approach to resolve implementation bottlenecks.

Accelerating Green Energy and Urban Sanitation

A major focus was placed on the adoption of renewable energy in urban areas. The Prime Minister urged states to accelerate rooftop solar installations across cities, residential clusters, and public institutions. He emphasized that rooftop solar should be pursued “in mission mode” to reduce electricity costs, bolster energy security, and promote clean energy at both household and community levels. Additionally, he advocated for innovative deployment of solar infrastructure over canal networks to optimize land use and reduce water evaporation.

Regarding urban sanitation and waste management, PM Modi directed that the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 must transcend mere infrastructure creation. He called for measurable outcomes through regular monitoring and active citizen participation, instructing states to expedite the completion of solid waste management infrastructure, including waste processing facilities and GOBARdhan plants.

Key Project Reviews and Strategic Directives

  • Ken-Betwa River Inter-linking Project: This project was reviewed with a call for faster execution. Modi suggested it could serve as a model for resolving inter-state water issues through cooperation, streamlined clearances, and technology-driven monitoring. He encouraged states to explore similar opportunities for river-linking, groundwater recharge, irrigation, and water conservation to ensure long-term water security.
  • Vadhavan Port Development: During a review of road and port connectivity, the Prime Minister stated that the upcoming Vadhavan Port should be developed as a benchmark for integrated, multi-modal logistics, rather than just a standalone port. He envisioned seamless connectivity through coastal shipping, inland waterways, dedicated freight corridors, highways, high-speed rail, and airport linkages to forge a future-ready logistics ecosystem.

The 51st PRAGATI meeting also marked the operationalization of a new monthly review mechanism for social sector schemes at the state level, a directive previously issued by the Prime Minister. The Swachh Bharat Mission has been selected as the inaugural scheme for review under this new framework, aiming to enhance accountability and facilitate quicker issue resolution at district and state levels.
