Prime Ministers Modi and Takaichi jointly inaugurated Maruti Suzuki's new Kharkhoda plant in Haryana. The ₹35,000 crore facility aims for 1 million vehicles annually and will create over 21,000 jobs, strengthening India-Japan economic ties.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart, Sanae Takaichi, jointly inaugurated Maruti Suzuki India’s fourth vehicle manufacturing facility in Kharkhoda, Haryana, on Thursday. This significant event marks a major milestone in the deepening economic partnership between India and Japan, alongside a substantial boost to India's manufacturing ambitions.

Major Investment and Job Creation

The new Kharkhoda plant, sprawling across 800 acres and incorporating an integrated supplier park, represents a total investment of approximately ₹35,000 crore from Maruti Suzuki, including its supplier ecosystem. This ambitious project is projected to generate over 21,000 direct employment opportunities, significantly contributing to regional economic growth.

Once fully operational, the state-of-the-art facility is designed to achieve an annual production capacity of 10 lakh (one million) vehicles. This expansion is a crucial step for Maruti Suzuki towards its broader target of reaching 40 lakh (four million) units in annual vehicle production, solidifying its manufacturing base in India.

Advanced Technology and Sustainability at Kharkhoda

The Kharkhoda facility is engineered around Maruti Suzuki’s innovative ‘Suzuki Smart Factory’ concept, integrating Industry 5.0-enabled manufacturing technologies. A strong emphasis has been placed on sustainable operations, with the plant designed to run entirely on 100% renewable electricity. Advanced AI-powered collaborative robots, known as cobots, will be deployed to enhance manufacturing efficiency and precision.

Environmental Initiatives

  • Zero Liquid Discharge: The plant incorporates a comprehensive Zero Liquid Discharge manufacturing system.
  • Water Recycling: A commitment to 100% water recycling within the facility.
  • Biogas Plant: A dedicated biogas plant is anticipated to be commissioned during the fiscal year 2027.
  • Solar Power: An in-house solar power plant with a planned capacity of up to 70 MW will further reduce the plant's carbon footprint.
  • Greener Logistics: An in-plant railway siding is included to support more environmentally friendly transportation of goods and vehicles.

Strengthening India-Japan Partnership

The inauguration, held as part of the India-Japan Joint Economic Forum in New Delhi, highlights the robust industrial and strategic partnership between the two nations. Maruti Suzuki's expanded manufacturing capabilities at Kharkhoda are set to bolster the Indian government’s ‘Make in India, Make for the World’ vision by significantly enhancing export-oriented production.

“This facility is not just about manufacturing; it's about fostering innovation, creating jobs, and strengthening the economic ties between India and Japan,” stated a representative at the event, underscoring the broader implications of the new plant.
