Shares of PB Fintech Ltd., the parent company behind prominent Indian insurance marketplace Policybazaar and lending platform Paisabazaar, plummeted to a 52-week low on Monday. The significant drop follows the company's Q2 FY27 earnings announcement, with analysts pointing to higher operating expenses and looming regulatory changes as primary drivers for the stock's sharp decline.
PB Fintech's Q2 FY27 Performance
The company's stock fell 7 percent in Monday's trading, hitting a low of Rs 930, and was last seen trading 6.40 percent lower at Rs 936. This extends a three-month slide, during which the shares have crashed by 41.60 percent. While PB Fintech reported a 35 percent year-on-year (YoY) revenue growth for the September quarter (Q2 FY27)—exceeding some analyst estimates—its adjusted EBITDA of Rs 220 crore, despite a 39 percent YoY increase, missed projections due to elevated expenses.
Analyst Reactions and Outlook
Global brokerage Jefferies acknowledged the strong revenue growth but highlighted the EBITDA miss and flagged potential slower growth in the second half of FY27, attributing it to the receding impact of Goods and Services Tax (GST) tailwinds. Jefferies subsequently cut its FY27 estimated profit after tax (PAT) by 3 percent to account for the higher operational costs, setting a target price of Rs 1,540.
Motilal Oswal Financial Services (MOFSL) maintained its revenue forecasts but revised down its EBITDA estimates for FY27 and FY28 by 9 percent and 10 percent, respectively, also citing the elevated cost structure observed in Q2 FY27. MOFSL reiterated a "Neutral" stance, with a revised target price of Rs 1,050.
Regulatory Concerns Weigh Heavily
Adding to investor concerns, JM Financial emphasized that the Q2 performance was overshadowed by a consultation paper from the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI). This paper proposes significant changes to commission caps, Expenses of Management (EoM), and distribution norms within the insurance sector. These potential reforms could drastically alter the commission structure for insurance distributors, impacting companies like Policybazaar.
JM Financial has already incorporated the proposed framework into its financial model from FY28E, assuming a reset of blended take rates towards the capped levels and the potential discontinuation of models like PB Partners due to unviability. Consequently, the brokerage slashed its FY28/29E revenue estimates by 55 percent and 53 percent, respectively, and its EPS estimates by 55 percent and 40 percent. Despite these cuts, JM Financial upgraded its rating to "BUY" with a revised target price of Rs 1,200, down from Rs 1,780, suggesting that the market may have overreacted to the potential impact.
PB Fintech has indicated it is exploring measures to mitigate these regulatory risks, including expanding non-insurance revenue streams, enhancing productivity, and aligning costs with net present values (NPVs).
The market will closely monitor further developments regarding the IRDAI's proposed guidelines and PB Fintech's strategic responses to navigate these challenges.
