PayU Launches Accessible Checkout for Visually Impaired, Enhancing Digital Payments

· · 3 min read

PayU has introduced India's first RBI-compliant accessible payment checkout, designed to empower visually impaired users to complete online transactions independently. Features include screen-reader optimization and adaptive visual modes.

PayU Introduces Accessible Digital Payment Solution

PayU has launched what it describes as India’s first Reserve Bank of India (RBI)-compliant payment checkout specifically engineered for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. This pioneering initiative aims to significantly enhance financial inclusion by enabling users to navigate digital payment pages, select payment options, and complete transactions independently, without needing assistance.

The introduction of this accessible checkout aligns with the RBI’s October 2024 accessibility mandate, which requires digital payment providers to adhere to accessibility standards for persons with disabilities as outlined in BIS IS 17802.

Key Features for Enhanced Accessibility

The new PayU checkout is designed to overcome common difficulties visually impaired users face with conventional online payment interfaces. Its core features include:

  • Screen-reader optimization: The system can communicate payment process elements via voice commands, allowing users to understand options like UPI and net banking, verify amounts, and proceed with payments.
  • Adaptive user profiles: Users can personalize the interface by adjusting cursor size, button dimensions, and navigation aids. These preferences can be saved for future use, eliminating the need for repeated configuration.
  • Visual inclusivity modes: For users with low vision, color blindness, or light sensitivity, the checkout offers modes such as high contrast, greyscale, color inversion, and saturation adjustments.
  • Text resizing: Text can be enlarged up to 200% of the standard size, designed to remain readable and usable without overlapping or obscuring other page elements.

Seamless Integration and Positive Reception

For consumers, the accessible payment process integrates smoothly into the regular online checkout journey. When a merchant utilizes PayU’s accessible checkout, users can access the payment page via a screen reader, choose their method, verify details, and complete the transaction.

Manas Mishra, Chief Product Officer at PayU and Wibmo, emphasized the importance of this development.

“True financial inclusion is only possible when every individual can access and use digital payments independently,” Mishra stated, highlighting accessibility as a core design principle for the company.

The National Association for the Blind, Delhi, General Secretary, Prashant Ranjan Verma, successfully tested the system, completing a UPI payment independently using VoiceOver. He commended PayU's efforts while advocating for continuous improvements in digital accessibility.

Crucially, merchants already using PayU’s payment gateway do not require any new integrations. The accessibility features are seamlessly embedded within the existing checkout experience, ensuring a broad and rapid rollout.

As digital payments become increasingly integral to daily life, this move by PayU is set to significantly reduce reliance on assistance for visually impaired users, fostering greater independence and equity in the digital economy.
