Onion Wholesale Prices Drop 9% in 9 Days; Retail Relief Expected, Says Govt

· · 2 min read

Wholesale onion prices have fallen 9% across Indian markets in the last nine days, signaling potential relief for consumers. The government anticipates retail rates will soon moderate following this decline, addressing recent sharp increases.

Indian consumers may soon experience a reprieve from soaring onion prices as wholesale rates have registered a significant 9% decline across various mandis over the past nine days. This positive trend, reported by the government, is expected to translate into lower retail prices in the coming weeks.

Retail Prices Under Pressure

As of Tuesday, the all-India average retail price for onions stood at ₹53.92 per kilogram. This figure represents a substantial 48% increase compared to a month ago and a staggering 94% rise from prices recorded a year earlier. Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare indicated that the recent fall in wholesale rates is a strong indicator that retail prices will also moderate.

Government Intervention and Buffer Stocks

The government has actively intervened to stabilize the market. Currently, a buffer stock of 1.21 lakh tonnes of onions is being maintained for the current year. Secretary Khare confirmed that there is no shortage of onions in the market. To directly support consumers, the Centre initiated retail sales of onions at a subsidized rate of ₹35 per kg last month.

This initiative is being implemented across approximately 48 cities through various retail outlets, including NCCF, NAFED, and Kendriya Bhandar, as well as via mobile vans. The disposal of onions from the Price Stabilisation Fund (PSF) buffer commenced on August 24, utilizing a hybrid transportation model that includes dedicated railway rakes, known as Kanda Express, alongside road transport to enhance availability and mitigate seasonal price pressures.

Inflation Trends and Production Figures

The decline in wholesale prices comes after a period of sharp inflation. Onion inflation surged to 48.27% in August, a considerable jump from 22.54% in July. Typically, onion prices tend to rise between August and September due to factors such as festive demand, weather-related disruptions, supply chain movements, and shifts in demand patterns.

Despite these seasonal pressures and recent price increases, India's onion production for 2025-26 was recorded at 307.37 lakh tonnes. This figure is only marginally lower than the 307.67 lakh tonnes produced in the preceding year, suggesting that overall supply remains robust.
