Shares of Ola Electric Mobility Ltd saw a significant surge of nearly 3% in Wednesday's trading, reaching Rs 40.80 on the BSE. The boost came after the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI), Government of India, approved revised timelines for Ola Cell Technologies Private Limited (OCT), a wholly-owned subsidiary, under the ACC Production Linked Incentive Scheme.
Extended PLI Scheme Boosts Ola's Cell Business
The MHI's decision is more than a mere timeline extension; it secures a full five-year PLI window for Ola Electric's 20 GWh allocation, valid through calendar year 2031. This crucial approval unlocks substantial cumulative PLI incentives of up to Rs 7,240 crore for the company. Disbursements are set to begin quarterly, starting next quarter, establishing a steady incentive stream as Ola Electric expands its cell manufacturing operations.
Bhavish Aggarwal, Chairman and Managing Director, Ola Electric, stated, "The revised timeline is more than an extension. It transforms the economics of our cell business by converting an earlier milestone overhang into a five-year, quarterly PLI opportunity of up to Rs 7,240 crore. We hadn't factored any incentives into our business projections after overshooting the original timelines."
Aggarwal further emphasized that Ola is now significantly ahead of the government's revised schedule, positioning the company to access the full potential of these incentives and receive disbursements as early as the next quarter.
Accelerating Battery Manufacturing Capacity
Ola Electric currently boasts an installed cell-manufacturing capacity of 2.5 GWh, with an additional 3.5 GWh actively under installation. The company projects reaching 6 GWh by the end of the ongoing quarter, a milestone achieved well in advance of the revised December 2026 deadline. The MHI's decision effectively extends the original timelines by two years, providing Ola with greater flexibility and support.
The company highlighted the critical role of lithium cells as a foundational technology spanning electric mobility, energy storage, drones, robotics, and next-generation industrial systems. Developing these capabilities domestically is seen as vital for strengthening India's energy security and technological independence, while simultaneously fostering a globally competitive domestic battery ecosystem.
Ola Electric is developing a multi-chemistry cell platform, incorporating both NMC and LFP technologies. This effort is supported by indigenous research and development, increased localization of battery materials, improved manufacturing yields, and closed-loop material recovery processes.
Future Energy Roadmap Unveiling
Looking ahead, Ola Electric plans to unveil its broader energy product roadmap, including initiatives like Shakti and Mahashakti, and the next phase of its energy platform. These announcements will be made directly across Ola Electric’s official channels on the upcoming Independence Day.
