Ola Electric Develops Prismatic Cells for Mahashakti Grid Storage System

· · 2 min read

Ola Electric, led by Bhavish Aggarwal, is developing advanced prismatic lithium-ion cells to power its upcoming Mahashakti grid energy storage product. This new cell design offers superior space utilization compared to current cylindrical cells.

Ola Electric is making a significant strategic move into the energy storage sector with the development of prismatic lithium-ion cells for its Mahashakti grid energy storage system. Company founder Bhavish Aggarwal confirmed the ongoing work on these new cells during Ola Electric’s Q4 FY26 earnings conference call.

Mahashakti will be built on Ola Electric’s prismatic LFP (lithium iron phosphate) platform. Unlike the cylindrical cells currently manufactured by Ola Electric for automobiles and battery energy storage systems, prismatic cells are characterized by their rigid, rectangular casings. This flat and compact design allows for a much denser packing of cells, significantly improving space utilization by minimizing gaps between individual battery units.

Expanding Cell Capacity for Future Growth

Aggarwal indicated that while Ola Electric currently produces cylindrical cells, the company plans to expand its cell manufacturing capabilities to include prismatic cells. This expansion, however, is contingent on raising capital at a subsidiary level, a move planned for the current financial year.

The company's cell gigafactory in Tamil Nadu currently has an operational capacity of 2.5 GWh for cylindrical cells. Aggarwal expects this to exceed 2 GWh by the end of the September quarter. For the full year, 2 GWh capacity is allocated for in-house business, over 1 GWh for external auto sales, and the remainder dedicated to Shakti and Mahashakti projects.

Market Engagement and Sales Outlook

Ola Electric is actively engaged in product development for Mahashakti and has already initiated discussions with various platforms, sharing specifications that have garnered positive feedback. Further details regarding the product are expected to be released over the coming quarters.

In other company news, Ola Electric saw its Roadster motorbike account for approximately 15% of its volumes in the March quarter. While the company experienced a decline in monthly volumes from November 2025 to February 2026, Aggarwal expressed optimism for a rebound. He attributed previous sales challenges to service-related issues that impacted brand trust. With improved service stability and inventory availability, Aggarwal anticipates monthly volumes to recover to between 17,000 and 22,000 units in the coming months.
