NSE's Cyber Fortress: Millions of Attacks Thwarted, Zero Breaches Reported

· · 2 min read

The National Stock Exchange's elite cyber-defense unit has successfully repelled millions of sophisticated attacks, maintaining zero breaches despite persistent threats, including during geopolitical events like Operation Sindoor. Its homegrown technology and dedicated team ensure seamless daily operations.

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) of India, a cornerstone of the nation's financial markets, operates under a constant barrage of cyberattacks. Yet, despite facing millions of sophisticated digital assaults, the exchange boasts an impeccable record: zero breaches. This resilience is a testament to its formidable, homegrown technological infrastructure and the unwavering vigilance of its dedicated cyber-defense unit.

Defending India's Financial Heartbeat

At an air-gapped cyber-defence unit within Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex, an elite team works around the clock to safeguard the NSE's digital integrity. The scene on May 7, 2025, at 5 a.m., was particularly tense. As India's armed forces executed "Operation Sindoor" against terrorist infrastructure, the NSE's systems simultaneously faced nearly 4 million cyberattacks. Originating predominantly from regions like Ankara, Islamabad, and other parts of Asia, these coordinated efforts aimed to disrupt the crucial 9 a.m. pre-open session, which sees 200 million investors log in daily.

The NSE's "undefeated army" of software engineers successfully repelled every single attempt. Their victories, often kept under wraps, are a daily occurrence. The team operates 24x7x365, noting a significant surge in attack intensity during major national events such as G20 summits, India-Pakistan cricket matches, and key elections.

Proprietary Tech and Unmatched Scale

The exchange's core digital platform stands as its most vital asset, reflected in a 29% increase in tech spending, reaching Rs 1,312 crore in the financial year ending March 2026. Fully automated since its inception in the early 1990s, the NSE processes an astounding 5 million transactions every second. To put this into perspective, the NSE handles more transactions daily than India's hugely popular Unified Payments Interface (UPI) processes monthly, effectively channeling about one-third of the wealth held by 1.4 billion Indians.

Crucially, much of this advanced infrastructure, including its 24 electronic gateways capable of matching over 275,000 orders per second, was developed in-house. This was not merely a strategic choice but a necessity, as foreign vendors reportedly declined contracts due to the sheer volume and complexity of the order flow required by the NSE.

Amidst an IPO

This insight into the NSE's robust cybersecurity comes as the exchange prepares for a significant public offering. Its Rs 22,600 crore offer for sale is set to commence on September 17, with shares listing on the rival Bombay Stock Exchange on September 24. The NSE's proven ability to secure its operations against relentless cyber threats adds a critical layer of confidence for potential investors.
