Nipun Aggarwal, currently serving as the Chief Commercial Officer for Air India, is rapidly emerging as a pivotal leader in the Tata Group's ambitious multi-year overhaul of its aviation businesses. His recent appointment as Chairman of Air India Express, a position previously held by Air India CEO Campbell Wilson, highlights his expanding influence within the conglomerate.
Leadership Transition Underway at Air India
The transition in Air India's top leadership is already in motion. CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson communicated his intention to step down in mid-2026 to Tata Group Chairman N. Chandrasekaran in 2024. The airline has since been actively preparing for a smooth succession as it enters its next phase of growth and expansion.
Aggarwal has been central to these efforts since joining Air India in January 2022, shortly after Tata Sons successfully acquired the national carrier. His extensive portfolio as Chief Commercial Officer includes critical areas such as aircraft acquisition and financing, network planning, revenue management, sales and marketing strategies, loyalty programs, and strategic alliances. He also plays a deep role in merger integration and broader transformation initiatives across the Air India group.
Consolidating Tata's Aviation Portfolio
A significant part of Aggarwal's mandate has involved the complex consolidation of four airlines—Air India, Vistara, Air India Express, and AirAsia India (now AIX Connect)—into a streamlined two-airline structure. With much of this structural integration now complete, the focus has shifted towards optimizing fleet operations, route networks, and enhancing the overall customer experience, all areas under Aggarwal's direct oversight.
Aggarwal's Extensive Background and Expertise
Before his tenure at Air India, Aggarwal spent nearly five years as Senior Vice President at Tata Sons, collaborating closely with the Group Chairman and Group CFO's offices. During this period, he spearheaded several high-profile acquisitions and restructuring exercises across various Tata companies, establishing a reputation as a skilled dealmaker with robust execution capabilities.
His professional journey also includes significant roles in investment and corporate banking at institutions like Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Standard Chartered Bank, along with a stint as a Commercial Advisor at BP. Aggarwal began his career as a graduate engineer trainee at Larsen & Toubro. He holds a postgraduate diploma in management from IIM Calcutta and a degree in electrical engineering from Delhi College of Engineering.
With over 28 years of experience spanning finance, strategy, and operations, Aggarwal brings a unique blend of financial acumen and operational oversight. This combination is considered crucial as Air India navigates contemporary challenges such as aircraft delivery delays, rising maintenance costs associated with an aging fleet, and the complexities of scaling up international operations amidst global economic pressures like the oil crisis.
