Immigration New Zealand (INZ) is implementing a significant change to its visitor visa application process, moving the majority of applications to its enhanced Immigration Online platform. This shift, effective from September 24, 2026, aims to streamline the application procedure for both applicants and immigration officials.
What's Changing for New Zealand Visitor Visas?
From September 24, 2026, new applications for most visitor visa categories will no longer be accepted through the existing online system. Instead, applicants must use the upgraded Immigration Online platform. This move is part of INZ’s broader strategy to consolidate visa services onto a single digital platform, enhancing efficiency and accessibility.
For those who have already started a draft application in the old system before the September 24 deadline, there will be a grace period to complete and submit it. However, from October 8, 2026, the old system will permanently close for the listed visitor visa application forms, and any unfinished drafts will be deleted. Applicants will then need to start afresh on the enhanced platform.
Submitted applications will not be affected by these changes. Applicants can continue to access their existing applications in the old system to upload documents or respond to INZ requests until a decision is made.
Affected Visitor Visa Categories
The transition to the enhanced Immigration Online system will encompass a wide array of visitor visa categories, including:
- Visitor Visa
- Business Visitor Visa
- Academic Visitor Visa
- Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa
- Guardian Visitor Visa
- Medical Treatment Visitor Visa
- Sports Events Visitor Visa
- Visiting Media Visitor Visa
- Private Yacht or Plane Visitor Visa
Additionally, the Group Visitor Visa and Tour Escort Visitor Visa will become available on the upgraded platform even earlier, from August 24, 2026. The Group Visitor Visa will specifically replace existing MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) and FAO (Foreign Affairs Official) processes.
Unaffected Categories (For Now)
Not all visitor visa categories are part of this immediate transition. Applications for the Partner of a New Zealander Visitor Visa and Child of a New Zealander Visitor Visa will continue to be processed through the old system until a future transition.
It is also important to note that visitor visas for partners and children of military personnel, students, and workers have already been successfully moved to the enhanced Immigration Online system in previous phases.
Why the Digital Transition?
Immigration New Zealand has stated that the enhanced Immigration Online platform is now its preferred system for processing visitor visa applications, a platform it has been gradually populating with various visa categories since 2021. By closing certain forms on the older system, INZ aims to create a more efficient, unified digital process, allowing resources to be concentrated on applications handled through the upgraded platform.
