Naveen Jindal Questions Naming Vedanta's Anil Agarwal in FIR After Boiler Blast

· · 3 min read

BJP MP Naveen Jindal has voiced "serious concerns" over Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal being named in the FIR following the Chhattisgarh boiler plant explosion. Jindal emphasized the need for a thorough investigation before assigning responsibility and called for proper compensation for the 21 families affected.

Industrialist Questions Naming of Vedanta Chairman in FIR

Industrialist and BJP Member of Parliament Naveen Jindal on Saturday expressed grave concern over the inclusion of Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal's name in the First Information Report (FIR) related to the recent boiler plant explosion in Chhattisgarh. Jindal strongly advocated for a comprehensive investigation to establish responsibility based on evidence before any punitive action is taken. He also stressed that adequate compensation and livelihood support for the 20 families who suffered immense loss, alongside a thorough probe, are non-negotiable.

The police in Chhattisgarh registered an FIR following the deadly April 14 blast at Vedanta's power plant. The case includes charges related to causing death by negligence and negligent conduct with machinery. Among the 8-10 individuals named in the FIR are Vedanta Group chairman Anil Agarwal and plant head Devendra Patel.

Anil Agarwal's Background and Jindal's Defense

Jindal highlighted Agarwal's humble origins, describing him as a self-made individual from a backward community who built a global enterprise from the ground up. He argued that Agarwal had no direct operational role in the plant's daily activities. Jindal drew a parallel to accidents in public sector undertakings (PSUs) or railways, questioning whether the chairman is typically named in such FIRs. He asserted that the same standard should apply equally to the private sector.

In his appeal, Jindal urged authorities to prioritize investigation and establish accountability based on concrete evidence before proceeding with legal action. He underscored that India's vision for a 'Viksit Bharat' (Developed India) relies on investors like Agarwal continuing to invest and build, which is only possible when they trust the system and due process.

Chhattisgarh Boiler Explosion: Details and Investigation Findings

The tragedy occurred on April 14 at Vedanta’s power plant in Singhitarai village, located in Chhattisgarh's Sakti district. The explosion, which took place in a steel tube carrying high-pressure steam from the boiler to the turbine, initially killed four workers on the spot. The death toll has since tragically risen to 21 after another worker, Kismat Ali from Madhya Pradesh, succumbed to injuries at a private hospital in Raipur.

Police officials confirmed that a preliminary technical investigation into the blast pointed to excessive fuel accumulation inside the boiler furnace as the cause. This accumulation led to a critical pressure build-up, ultimately triggering the devastating explosion. A report from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Sakti further corroborated these findings, confirming fuel accumulation and resulting pressure as the primary factors behind the incident.

The deceased include six labourers from West Bengal, five from Chhattisgarh, three each from Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh, and two each from Bihar and Madhya Pradesh, reflecting the wide impact of the industrial accident.
