A significant study conducted in the UK has revealed that Type 2 diabetes impacts men and women in distinct ways, leading to differing patterns of complications. Analyzing nearly 29,000 anonymized healthcare records, researchers found clear sex-based disparities in the development of conditions following a diabetes diagnosis.
Sex-Specific Complications Emerge
The research, published in PLOS Medicine, tracked the timing and sequence of several major health issues, including hypertension, cardiovascular disease, end-stage renal disease, and mental health conditions, in individuals newly diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes between 2010 and 2020.
- For Men: The study found men were significantly more likely to develop cardiovascular diseases and kidney complications. Approximately 8.4% of men experienced these issues, compared to 5.3% of women. Men also showed a slightly higher rate of hypertension trajectories, at 21.1% versus 20.2% for women. Generally, men experienced an earlier onset of most complications.
- For Women: Conversely, women faced a higher likelihood of developing mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, or somatoform disorders after a diabetes diagnosis. This affected 8.1% of women, compared to 5.3% of men. Women also exhibited higher overall healthcare utilization and a greater reliance on long-term prescriptions.
Hypertension and Mortality Risks
Hypertension was identified as the most common complication across all ages and sexes following a Type 2 diabetes diagnosis. A particularly concerning finding was the strong link between diabetes and mental health issues, which was associated with premature mortality in both sexes.
Both men and women who developed mental health conditions after diabetes had premature mortality compared to those with other disease paths. Men in this group died on average nine years younger than women, despite using healthcare services less.
This highlights a critical area for intervention, especially given men's lower engagement with healthcare services despite their earlier onset of complications and higher premature mortality in the mental health cohort.
Tailored Healthcare Strategies Needed
The study's authors emphasize the need for healthcare strategies that are specifically tailored to an individual's sex and age. Their recommendations include:
- Routine mental health screening within diabetes care, particularly for younger women.
- Earlier and more vigilant monitoring for cardiovascular and kidney disease in men.
- Initiatives to improve healthcare engagement among men with Type 2 diabetes.
Researchers also cautioned that while the study identifies strong correlations, it does not definitively prove causation. Differences in mental health diagnoses, for instance, could partly reflect varying healthcare-seeking behaviors between sexes rather than absolute differences in condition rates.
