Indian business magnate Mukesh Ambani has reclaimed his position as Asia's richest individual, surpassing ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming. This achievement follows a significant nearly 12% surge in the stock value of Reliance Industries, Ambani's conglomerate, which added an estimated $8.5 billion to his personal wealth on Monday.
According to Forbes' Real-Time Billionaires list, Ambani's net worth now stands at an estimated $88.8 billion, placing him ahead of Zhang Yiming, whose wealth is reported at $84 billion. The substantial rise in Reliance Industries shares also boosted the company's market value by over $19 billion.
Jio Platforms' Strong Market Debut Fuels Growth
A key factor contributing to Reliance Industries' impressive performance is the stellar trading debut of its subsidiary, Jio Platforms. In late October, Jio Platforms saw its shares surge by 27% on the National Stock Exchange in Mumbai. This IPO was the largest in India's history, successfully raising $3.2 billion and valuing the digital services and telecommunications arm at approximately $106 billion. Reliance Industries retains a significant 66% stake in Jio Platforms, which is India’s largest mobile carrier, boasting over 533 million subscribers as of June.
Quarterly Earnings Exceed Expectations
The recent stock surge also coincided with Reliance Industries reporting robust quarterly revenues of 255.5 billion rupees (approximately $2.7 billion). This figure comfortably exceeded analysts' predictions of $2.3 billion (213.67 billion rupees), further bolstering investor confidence. Following the earnings announcement, an analyst at Avendus Spark upgraded the stock, leading to a rare consensus among analysts with no 'hold' or 'sell' recommendations for the first time since 2017, as reported by Bloomberg.
Reliance Industries, founded by Dhirubhai Hirachand Ambani in 1957, operates across a diverse range of sectors including petrochemicals, oil and gas, telecom, retail, media, and financial services. The company maintains the highest market capitalization in India, valued at around $186 billion, and was ranked 55th globally on the Forbes Global 2000 list in 2026, with reported sales of $119.7 billion.
