· · 2 min read

Motilal Oswal Financial Services (MOFSL) recently received a long-term credit rating upgrade to 'IND AA+/Stable' from India Ratings and Research. This reflects MOFSL's stronger business profile and diversified revenue, prompting a notable rise in its stock price on Thursday.

Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd (MOFSL) has secured a significant long-term credit rating upgrade from India Ratings and Research (Ind-Ra), moving from 'IND AA/Positive' to 'IND AA+/Stable'. This upgrade encompasses the non-convertible debentures (NCDs) and bank loan facilities of both MOFSL and Motilal Oswal Home Finance Ltd, as well as the NCDs of Motilal Oswal Finvest Ltd. Additionally, Ind-Ra reaffirmed the 'IND A1+' rating for the commercial paper programmes across MOFSL, Motilal Oswal Finvest, and Motilal Oswal Wealth Ltd.

Following the announcement, MOFSL shares demonstrated a positive reaction on Thursday, trading at Rs 985.80, a 2.89% increase from their previous close of Rs 976. The stock opened at Rs 975.50 and briefly touched an intraday high of Rs 1,004.30, indicating strong market confidence.

Reasons Behind the Upgrade

Ind-Ra's decision to upgrade MOFSL's rating is rooted in several key factors highlighting the company's robust financial health and strategic evolution. The agency cited a stronger overall business profile, driven by the sustained expansion of MOFSL’s asset management and private wealth divisions. This growth has resulted in a significant increase in recurring fee-based revenue and enhanced visibility for profitability across its core operating segments.

Furthermore, Ind-Ra noted that MOFSL's improved earnings diversification has reduced its reliance on transaction-based income, contributing to a more stable financial outlook. The rating agency also underscored the group's comfortable capitalisation, adequate liquidity buffers, and the flexibility of liquidity across its various entities as crucial supporting elements for its financial resilience.

MOFSL's Strategic Transformation

Motilal Oswal Financial Services views the rating upgrade as a clear validation of its strategic transformation from a traditional equity broking house into a comprehensive wealth creation platform. The company highlighted that approximately two-thirds of its current revenue is now recurring, with its asset and wealth management businesses emerging as primary drivers of profit.

Shalibhadra Shah, Group Chief Financial Officer at MOFSL, commented on the upgrade, stating that it accurately reflects the quality and growth of the company's earnings. He emphasized the successful shift towards fee-based, annuity-like revenue streams and the maintenance of a conservative balance sheet. Shah anticipates that this stronger rating will broaden the group's access to diversified funding sources and contribute to greater efficiency in borrowing costs.

With this latest assessment, Motilal Oswal Financial Services proudly announced that it now holds an 'AA+' rating from all three leading credit rating agencies in India, solidifying its position within the financial sector.
